As our Tax and Catalog Analyst, you will be Canfor’s key resource for provincial sales tax applications related to equipment, parts, services, and inventory. You will work across Purchasing, Finance, Operations, IT, suppliers, and other partners to support tax compliance while taking ownership of the integrity and ongoing maintenance of our corporate inventory catalogue.
This is a unique opportunity to combine your tax knowledge with your analytical and systems skills while helping us continuously improve how we manage tax compliance, inventory information, and related processes.
As our Tax and Catalog Analyst, you will:
- Provide guidance on the appropriate application of provincial sales tax (PST) to equipment, parts, services, and purchasing transactions.
- Review purchasing activity, identify potential tax issues, and work with Buyers and other stakeholders to resolve discrepancies.
- Assess the appropriate tax classification of new inventory items, catalogue additions, and multi-use inventory.
- Support provincial tax audits through research, data analysis, documentation, and follow-up on required actions.
- Monitor changes to provincial tax legislation, assess potential business impacts, and communicate relevant changes to internal stakeholders.
- Partner with Accounts Payable, Finance, suppliers, and regulatory agencies to investigate and resolve tax-related issues.
- Maintain the integrity of Canfor’s corporate inventory catalogue, ensuring item descriptions, tax classifications, nomenclature, and data meet established standards.
- Act as a key point of review for catalogue additions and changes, ensuring information is complete and accurate.
- Work with suppliers and internal partners to gather the information needed for accurate item descriptions and catalogue records.
- Support catalogue cleanup, data quality, standardization, and continuous improvement initiatives.
- Collaborate across Purchasing, Operations, Finance, and IT to identify opportunities to improve processes, systems, reporting, and automation.
- Provide provincial tax guidance and training to internal teams as required.
For this role, you will come equipped with:
- 3 to 5 years of relevant experience in purchasing, supply chain, inventory management, accounting, finance, information systems, or a related function, ideally in manufacturing or industry.
- Practical knowledge of provincial sales tax (PST) requirements and the ability to interpret and apply them in a business environment.
- Experience with ERP, inventory, CMMS, or similar business systems.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office, particularly Excel, and comfort working with data and databases.
- Analytical and problem-solving skills, with exceptional attention to detail.
- Research skills to assess regulatory requirements and business impacts, and translate findings into practical guidance.
- Communication and relationship-building skills to collaborate effectively with Purchasing, Finance, Operations, IT, and external partners.
- The ability to work independently, manage competing priorities, and meet deadlines.
- A valid driver’s licence and the ability to travel to Canfor locations as required.
Ideally, you also bring:
- Experience applying provincial tax rules in manufacturing, purchasing, inventory, accounts payable, or finance.
- Knowledge of industrial equipment, maintenance parts, or manufacturing operations.
- Experience with inventory master data, catalogue governance, data quality, tax audits, regulatory reviews, or tax recovery.
- Familiarity with Power BI, Power Automate, Power Query, or similar reporting and automation tools.
- Relevant post-secondary education, a professional designation, or an equivalent combination of education and practical experience in supply chain, accounting, finance, IT, or a related field.
