CAMPUS SECURITY OFFICER
Cape Breton University (CBU) invites applications for the position of Campus Security Officer within the Emergency Management & Security Services department. This is a full-time continuing position.

PURPOSE:
Under the general supervision of the Emergency Management & Security Services Manager, the Campus Security Officer is responsible for fostering a safe, secure, and inclusive campus community through education, prevention, and the enforcement of university regulations. This position is critical to maintaining continuous 24/7 campus security coverage, ensuring operational continuity and the university’s ability to respond effectively to emergencies without interruption.
The Campus Security Officer exercises independent judgment and sound decision- making in alignment with established policies and procedures, ensuring appropriate escalation and communication, particularly during emergent and high-risk situations, and may be required to provide immediate response activities and coordination until emergency services arrive.
The role supports the university, and is accountable for timely response, accurate reporting, and adherence to established procedures.
This is a physically demanding role requiring work in a fast-paced, high-pressure environment, including the ability to work the required rotating shifts (days, nights, weekends, and holidays).
SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES:
Security Services
- Promote the safety and security of students, staff, visitors, and University property.
- Respond to, assess, and coordinate incidents and emergencies, including initial scene control, fact gathering, documentation, and reporting. Assist with other investigative activities as assigned
- Exercise independent judgment while escalating incidents in accordance with established protocols and maintaining communication with supervisors.
- Monitor and control access points; lock and unlock facilities based on operational schedules.
- Conduct proactive patrols, monitor facilities and access points, and ensure the physical security of campus property.
- Build positive relationships and provide assistance, information, and support to staff, students, and visitors.
- Serve as a operational contact for Casual Campus Security Officers, providing guidance, mentorship, and support.
- Collaborate with internal departments to support coordinated responses to safety, behavioral, and wellness concerns.
- Prepare clear, accurate, and thorough reports, and preserve evidence as required.
- Maintain confidentiality and handle sensitive information in accordance with privacy legislation and university policies.
- Operate within the scope of authority defined by CBU Policies, other applicable legislation and Special Constable appointment, using appropriate and proportionate response measures.
- Administer First Aid/CPR and coordinate responses with emergency services (police, fire, EHS).
- Monitor and assist individuals in distress, ensuring appropriate intervention and escalation.
- Conduct traffic/parking enforcement.
- Conduct crowd and event coordination activities.
- Participate in fire safety programs, alarm testing, and emergency preparedness activities.
- On occasion, assist with conducting security audits and inspections, identifying risks and recommending corrective action
- Inspect safety equipment (e.g., fire extinguishers, AEDs) for operational readiness.
- Participate in the Safe Walk/Work Safe Program.
- Support operational continuity through consistent application of procedures and knowledge of campus-specific risks.
- Perform other related safety, security, and emergency coordination duties as assigned to support operational requirements.
Education and Engagement
- Support and deliver safety education programs for students and staff, including:
- Personal safety and campus security
- Alcohol and drug awareness
- Sexual violence prevention and response
- Residence safety
- Emergency preparedness
- Promote awareness, engagement, and community trust through proactive outreach.
QUALIFICATIONS AND SKILLS:
- Diploma or Certificate in policing, corrections, criminology, or equivalent experience.
- Minimum of 2 years’ experience in policing, corrections, or security services.
- Valid CPR, First Aid, and AED certification (or ability to obtain).
- Valid driver’s license with a clean abstract.
- Ability to obtain and maintain:
- Criminal Record Check
- Special Constable status (Applicable to Full-Time position only

- Strong attention to detail, particularly in documentation and reporting.
- Effective interpersonal and communication skills, with strong de-escalation abilities.
- Comfortable using security-related technology to support daily operations, including CCTV and camera systems, access control systems, Microsoft 365, and electronic reporting and records management platforms.
- Physically capable of performing operational duties, including prolonged periods of activity and responding effectively to emergency situations.
- Proven ability to work in fast-paced, high-pressure environments and make sound decisions under stress.
- Experienced in shift work, including days, nights, weekends, and holidays in a fast-paced environment.
- Strong situational awareness and risk assessment skills.
- Professionalism, integrity, and confidentiality.
- Resilience and composure in stressful or potentially traumatic situations.
- Maintain all required certifications and competencies.
- Participate in ongoing training and professional development to support operational effectiveness.
- Willingness to complete additional training as required.
