Childminder
ABOUT THE ROLE
Locations: Village Commons 610 8 Ave SE, Bowmont Commons; 5000 Bowness Rd NW; and community locations throughout Calgary.
Hours per week: Variable; no guaranteed hours. Casual shifts are available based on coverage needs, including vacation relief.
Wage: $17 - $26.55 per hour
Childminders support Carya’s program delivery by providing safe, responsive care for children aged 0–6 while parents participate in programs and activities. They build positive, respectful relationships with children and caregivers within a short-term program environment.

- You build respectful relationships with children, caregivers, and colleagues, communicating clearly and working collaboratively to support a positive childminding experience.
WHAT YOU WILL DO
Engagement and Program Delivery
- Ensure the safety and well-being of children while engaging them in age-appropriate activities.
- Interact with children using respectful, age-appropriate approaches and communicate with parents in a professional and supportive manner.
- Set up and adapt the childcare space for each program using age-appropriate, play-based activities. Ensure the space is cleaned and materials are stored appropriately after each session.
- Participate regularly in scheduled childminding team meetings (every 4–6 weeks).
- Provide basic directions and support to participants as needed (e.g., bathrooms, waiting areas, and program rooms).
- Attend required training sessions.
- Follow Carya’s policies and procedures, including flexibility to support evening or variable program schedules.
Safety & Reporting
- Maintain active supervision of young children, including attending to multiple children at once and responding quickly to safety concerns.
- Identify and eliminate potential safety hazards in the play area; remain vigilant to emerging safety issues during each childminding session.
- Report and document child protection concerns in accordance with Carya’s policies and procedures, with support from the Childminding Coordinator or Program Facilitator.
- Seek support from the Childminding Coordinator, program staff, or caregivers when addressing challenging behaviours.

WHAT YOU BRING
- Experience working with young children (ages 0–6) is required.
- Early Childhood Education training or certification is considered an asset.
- Experience supervising and engaging multiple young children in a group setting is an asset.
- Ability to respond calmly and appropriately to child safety, behavioural, and emotional needs.
- Ability to communicate respectfully and effectively with children, caregivers, and team members.
The successful candidate must provide a satisfactory Police Information Check with Vulnerable Sector Search (PICVSS) and a Child Intervention Record Check (IRC).
- Checks completed within the last 3 months will be accepted.
- Checks completed more than 3 months ago will need to be renewed, even if it was completed within the last 3 years.
