Being a guidance counselor means helping students understand themselves and their paths to assist them in making informed and coherent educational and professional choices.
On a daily basis, you will assess the psychological functioning, personal resources, and environmental factors of young and adult students. You will accompany and support them in developing coping strategies and in their decision-making, promoting their autonomy and their ability to build a life project aligned with their individual characteristics and their environment throughout their educational journey.
Responsibilities
The guidance counselor in adult general education will be part of an experienced team focused on the success and perseverance of students by supporting them in their educational paths and professional choices.
The individual will be responsible for helping, advising, accompanying, and assessing the psychological functioning, personal resources, and environmental conditions of adult students. They will intervene to develop and maintain active coping strategies.
The individual will work at the Champlain adult education center and will work with clients in socio-professional integration training (ISP), distance learning (FAD), francization, and pathways to obtaining a high school diploma (DES). At the Champlain adult education center, courses are aimed at individuals aged 16 and older and are tailored to each person's situation and specific needs to facilitate diploma attainment. Courses are offered during the day or evening and can be full-time or part-time.
The assignment location may be reviewed based on needs.
The individual may be required to work Monday evenings during registration.
Specific Tasks
- Assess students during individual or group meetings regarding their interests, aptitudes, abilities, personality, work experiences, and personal needs;
- Conduct individual or group counseling interviews to help students question themselves and build a comprehensive self-image, explore and clarify their situation, and establish personal and professional goals;
- Support students in finding ways to overcome the challenges inherent in achieving their training project as well as their social and professional integration;
- Contribute to identifying students facing difficulties through lists and collaboration with school team members, with a focus on prevention and intervention;
- Plan, organize, and lead information activities on education and professions to present the requirements of training programs, the nature of professions, and the situation and evolution of the job market;
- Collaborate with management, teachers, and professionals;
- Analyze various documents in students' files to properly guide them within the school system.
Requirements
- Be a member of the Ordre des conseillers et des conseillères d'orientation du Québec (OCCOQ);
- Enjoy working within a multidisciplinary team;
- Be able to maintain a steady pace and work on multiple files simultaneously;
- Demonstrate empathy and active listening;
- Have very good communication skills;
- Possess a good knowledge of institutional and community resources in the CSSMB territory (an asset);
- Have a good understanding of the education network (an asset);
- Proof of passing the French test SEL or CÉFRANC or TECFÉE or the enriched French exam of the CSSMB within three months of hiring at the latest.
