Role Description The Electrical Substation Engineer is a full-time, on-site role based in Vancouver, BC. This role involves designing and reviewing electrical substation layouts, single-line diagrams, protection and control schematics, and equipment specifications. The engineer collaborates with project managers, civil and structural engineers, and utility clients to develop technical solutions, prepare cost estimates, and support project planning. Daily tasks include performing power system studies, ensuring compliance with applicable codes and standards, and preparing detailed design documentation and reports. The engineer also supports construction activities with technical clarification, participates in site visits and inspections, and contributes to continuous improvement of design tools and processes.
Qualifications
- Strong technical skills in electrical power systems, including substation design, protection and control, and power system studies (e.g., load flow, short circuit, protection coordination).
- Proficiency with relevant engineering software such as AutoCAD or MicroStation, power system analysis tools (e.g., ETAP, CYME, or similar), and general office productivity tools.
- Knowledge of applicable standards and codes (e.g., IEEE, IEC, CSA, utility and safety regulations) and ability to apply them to substation engineering projects.
- Effective project coordination skills, including planning, scheduling, managing deliverables, and collaborating in multidisciplinary teams.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills for preparing technical documents, reports, and client correspondence.
- Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering or a closely related field; eligibility for professional engineering licensure (P.Eng.) in British Columbia or the ability to obtain it within a reasonable time frame.
- Experience in utility, transmission, or distribution projects and previous work on high-voltage substations is an asset.
- Demonstrated ability to work safely, perform site visits, interpret field conditions, and support construction and commissioning activities.
