The Opportunity
The Operations Department is comprised of three Branches: Administration, Parks and Forestry Operations, and Roads, Fleet and Technical Operations. Key responsibilities include the operation and maintenance of the City’s public works infrastructure and systems including roadways, rail, and winter maintenance; parks and green spaces, including forestry; and maintenance of the corporation’s fleet of vehicles and equipment.
Under the general guidance of the Supervisor of Fleet, the Fleet Technical Assistant is responsible for providing broad, complex, and diversified technical support to the Fleet Services section of the Operations Branch. This includes providing direct day to day assistance to Emergency Vehicle and Fleet Services Technicians, maintaining and updating parts and equipment inventory control information, assisting with workplace facility maintenance and specialized related equipment maintenance, providing fleet and vehicle logistics services, collaborating on workplace documentation and reporting requirements associated with the Highway Traffic Act and the Occupational Health and Safety Act, in addition to providing excellent customer service.
This position plays an important role in enhancing and advancing the Fleet Services section's ability to maintain the safe and reliable operational status of a large and diverse range of vehicles and equipment dedicated to municipal infrastructure operations and maintenance.

Education (degree/diploma/certifications)
- One (1) year College Certificate in Automotive Mechanics, Business Administration, Small Engine Repair, or Material and Inventory Management
- Forklift Operator Certificate
- Valid Ontario Class "D" Driver's Licence with a "Z" endorsement in good standing

Experience - Two (2) years of experience performing duties related to the major responsibilities of the position, including:
- one (1) year working in a diversified automotive repair shop, with a focus on light trucks and automobiles, heavy-duty and specialized vehicles and equipment, and off-road vehicles and equipment associated with landfill and parks operations
Knowledge/Skill/Ability - Working knowledge of the following legislation, regulations, or requirements: Highway Traffic Act (HTA); O.Reg. 199/07 Commercial Motor Vehicle Inspection; O.Reg 424/92 Commercial Vehicle Operator Certificate; R.R.O 1990, Reg. 625 Tire Standards and Specifications, Motor Vehicle Repair Act; O.Reg. 209/01 Elevating Devices; Occupational Health and Safety Act; Corporate and Workplace Specific Health and Safety requirements; Environmental Protection Act; O.Reg. 347 General Waste Management
- General knowledge of the following principles and standards: Automotive Lift Institute (ALI) ANSI/ALI ALCTV-2011 standard
- Working knowledge of the following principles and standards: corporate and workplace specific policies and procedures; motor vehicle maintenance and repair best practices; operation and maintenance of a wide range of municipally owned vehicles and equipment
- Thorough knowledge of Lift Truck Operations

- Availability to work evenings, weekends, or holidays

Location: Operations Centre, 165 Ferndale Drive North, Barrie, Ontario
Hours: The normal hours of work are 40 hours per week in accordance with the Collective Agreement
Wage: This position is within the CUPE Local 2380 Bargaining Unit with the following pay level and 2026 pay range:
- Pay Level: Level 2
- Hourly Pay Rate: $24.95 to $29.84
