Major Responsibilities:
Technical Engineering & Electrical Systems
- Provides specialized engineering expertise and technical expertise for the day-to-day performance and operation of electrical systems for the Jack Layton Ferry Terminal vessels and shoreside charging infrastructure, including grid connection and power distribution, charging systems, charging communication protocols, battery energy storage systems, vessel propulsion and motor drives, and all automation and control systems.
- Responds to critical incidents and system failures, diagnoses and resolves complex electrical and control system issues, and identifies opportunities to improve system reliability and performance.
- Develops and maintains short-term and long-term electrical asset management plans for ferry electrical systems, charging infrastructure, battery energy storage systems, and associated control systems.
- Provides specialized engineering advice and technical recommendations to management, vessel staff, maintenance personnel, consultants, contractors, manufacturers, utilities, and regulatory authorities regarding the maintenance, repair, installation, calibration, testing, and safety of the vessel electrical systems and charging infrastructure.
- Conducts technical evaluations and cost-benefit analyses of existing and proposed electrical technologies, equipment upgrades, and system modifications.
- Monitors and optimizes charging strategies and operational use, while ensuring system reliability, redundancy, and safety.
- Translates complex electrical systems into clear concepts for non-technical partners.
Regulatory Compliance, Safety & Technical Authority
- Exercises technical authority to identify non-compliance with established work, safety and maintenance requirements, stop unsafe work where necessary, and recommend corrective actions to supervisors.
- Ensures compliance with Transport Canada regulations, Classification Society rules, the Ontario Electrical Safety Code, the Occupational Health and Safety Act, manufacturer requirements and warranty conditions. Functions as the primary technical interface with utilities, infrastructure providers, system integrators, OEMs, and external contractors and service providers.
- Provides technical leadership and authoritative direction to vessel staff, maintenance personnel, and contractors on matters affecting electrical safety, regulatory compliance, asset reliability, and operational continuity of the electric ferry fleet and associated charging infrastructure.
- Has authority to direct work activities during critical emergency incidents, electrical system failures, and service disruptions to ensure the safety of employees and the public and the continuity of ferry operations.
- Acts as the senior technical authority for vessel electrical systems and charging infrastructure, providing direction to staff and contractors on technical, operational, and safety matters.
- Exercises independent judgment in determining appropriate maintenance, repair, testing, and commissioning methods; evaluates compliance with established standards; and has authority to require corrective action or suspend work that poses a safety, operational, or regulatory risk.
- Provides recommendations to management regarding contractor performance, workforce capability, resource requirements, asset reliability, and service delivery improvements.
Project Management, Commissioning & Implementation
- Leads electrical scope during vessel delivery, commissioning, and trials including the coordination with Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEMs) and systems integrators, validating system performance and readiness, and attending and accepting electrical tests and trials when required.
- Coordinates assigned projects, ensuring effective teamwork and communication, maintaining high standards of work quality and organizational performance combined with continuous learning.
People Management, Labour Relations & Employee Relations
- Ensures the effective administration of collective agreements and seeks advice from Corporate Employee Relations when providing guidance on collective agreement matters and employee related issues. May be required to participate in dispute resolution, the grievance procedure and arbitration.
- Provide disciplinary recommendations on contraventions by staff and participates in disciplinary meetings and/or investigations.
- Provides training to Marine Engineers 1& 2, and technical staff and develops and maintains crew-ready technical procedures, manuals, system documentation, electrical safety requirements, commissioning procedures, lock-out/tag-out expectations, maintenance standards, troubleshooting procedures and escalation pathways.
- Provides strategic advice and recommendations to management regarding disciplinary action, workforce management, labour relations strategy, and the administration of collective agreements, particularly as they relate to Marine Engineers and technical staff.
- Leads in the selection, assessment, and evaluation of project staff, including interviewing job applicants, administering practical examinations, participating on interview panels and performance reviews, and making recommendations regarding hiring, promotion, and other decisions.
- Participates in the development and implementation of labour relations strategies, negotiation mandates, and management responses to grievances and workplace disputes involving marine and technical operations.
Program Administration, Policy & Governance
- Implements detailed plans and recommends policies/procedures regarding program specific requirements.
- Conducts research into assigned area ensuring that such research takes into account developments within the field, corporate policies and practices, legislation and initiatives by other levels of government.
- Provides input into and administers assigned budget, ensuring that expenditures are controlled and maintained within approved budget limitations.
- Develops, interprets, and implements policies, procedures, standards, and operating practices that govern the work of others.
- Assesses lifecycle performance, reliability, obsolescence risks, and replacement requirements, and recommends capital renewal strategies.
- Coordinates warranties, service agreements, and technical support.
Key Qualifications

University Degree in Electrical Engineering or equivalent.

Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) designation (or eligibility) preferred.

Experience with marine electrical systems, battery storage systems, generators, switchboards, propulsion support systems, auxiliary systems, or advanced automation is highly preferred.

Extensive experience in the design, maintenance and troubleshooting of electrical equipment, control panels, programmable logic controllers, Human-Machine Interfaces (HMIs), and Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) systems.

Experience with advanced troubleshooting and diagnostic capabilities demonstrating proven problem-solving skills and an interest in continuous improvement of systems and processes.

Understanding of electrical theory, power systems, polyphase circuits, and power-electronic systems on marine or other industrial automation platforms.

Ability to interpret complex electrical drawings, PLC/automation schematics, and system diagnostics.

Strong computer literacy, including ability to use maintenance software, PLC interfaces, data logging, and reporting tools.

Experience Implementing safety procedures, including lock-out/tag-out procedures, electrical PPE, confined space and working at heights protocols.

Knowledge of applicable electrical regulations and safety requirements in the electrical trade.

Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with an ability to collaborate with diverse teams and stakeholders across technical and non-technical teams.

Experience using computer applications including Word and Excel and possess other basic related computer skills.

Experience providing leadership, supervision, training, mentoring, coaching, and evaluating staff and contractors.

Experience delivering effectively communicate, both orally and in writing at a management level.

Experience planing, scheduleing and manageing work, with sound judgement and decision-making skills.

Must have a valid Province of Ontario Class "G" Driver's License and be able to maintain same.

Must be available to work, evenings and weekends as required for operational needs
