The Coal Mine Theatre is one of Toronto’s most acclaimed independent theatres, a place where Canada’s leading artists come together in an intimate, transformable black-box space that puts audiences just feet from the action.
Founded in 2015 by Diana Bentley and Ted Dykstra, the Coal Mine has earned a reputation for fearless, actor-driven productions that are as raw as they are refined. Over nine seasons on the Danforth, it’s become a cornerstone of Toronto’s indie theatre scene, known for sold-out runs, extended performances, and a lineup that pairs celebrated performers with emerging voices.
With 53 Dora Mavor Moore Award nominations (including 13 wins) and 9 Toronto Theatre Critics Awards, the Coal Mine continues to prove that small stages can tell the biggest stories.
