COMMERCIAL MORTGAGE UNDERWRITER
Reporting to the Vice President, Lending, the Commercial Mortgage Underwriter will play an important role in the servicing, administration, and ongoing management of a Commercial Loan Portfolio. Working within the organization’s approved credit management policies and lending guidelines, the successful candidate will be responsible for evaluating credit and property risk, developing well-informed recommendations, and ensuring loan assets represent an appropriate level of risk and financial return.
This is an opportunity for an experienced commercial credit professional to apply strong analytical and underwriting expertise while working closely with internal and external stakeholders throughout the lending and funding process.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
Initial Analysis
- Assess, evaluate, structure, and make initial recommendations for approval or decline, as warranted, based on a thorough analysis of key risks.
- Conduct detailed analysis of financial statements within the context of specific industry, financial, and business risks.
- Assess property and related risks through site inspections and other means, including valuation-related factors such as market rents and debt service capacity, vacancy, appropriate capitalization rates, current appraisal reports, environmental reports, lease agreements, and other relevant considerations.
Credit Review, Analysis & Presentation
- Apply sound, consistent, and disciplined underwriting practices.
- Underwrite commercial credit applications within assigned limits and in accordance with the company’s lending guidelines and requirements.
- Complete the application process, including preparing and presenting appropriate analysis and recommendations to the final lending authority.
- Support and guide loan originations through well-informed and structured industry analysis.
- Escalate more complex issues and unresolved matters to Management as appropriate.
- Liaise and interact effectively with internal and external stakeholders, including solicitors, mortgage administration and funding staff, and branch staff, to ensure consistent, timely, and appropriate workflow and funding procedures.
- Meet assigned targets.
- Complete final reviews and write-ups of files in accordance with Audit and Regulatory requirements.
Other Functions
- Maintain ongoing weekly reporting and complete annual account reviews as required.
- Assist Management with the overall management and control of delinquency.
- Promote the organization’s full range of lending solutions, with a particular focus on commercial mortgages.
- Maintain current knowledge of industry developments, competition, and market trends.
- Collaborate closely with the team to ensure deliverables and objectives are consistently achieved.
SKILLS & KNOWLEDGE REQUIREMENTS
- 3–5 years of commercial credit underwriting and risk management experience within financial services, preferably with experience in commercial mortgage underwriting.
- Relevant post-secondary education, preferably with an emphasis on Business or Finance; completion of relevant commercial credit education/courses is preferred.
- Sound knowledge and understanding of business financial statements, business case and cash flow analysis, and accounting principles.
- Thorough knowledge of commercial account operating procedures and banking services.
- Sound understanding of commercial lending security documentation, including collection techniques and remedies.
- Strong understanding of commercial business structures.
- Familiarity with acceptable financing options and techniques.
- Strong analytical and negotiation skills.
- Self-motivated and creative, with strong interpersonal skills and the ability to work effectively within a team environment.
- Excellent communication skills – both oral and written, together with excellent telephone etiquette.
- A strong commitment to customer service excellence.
- Excellent organization skills, attention to detail, a strong sense of urgency, and demonstrated ability to prioritize and meet deadlines.
- Proficiency in the Microsoft Office Suite, including Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook.
