About the assignment:
In Q2 2027, Darlington Nuclear will carry out its Vacuum Building Outage (VBO) and Vacuum Building Inspection (VBI). All four units come offline for the VBO, which makes it one of the station's largest projects.
The outage has to be completed effectively and on schedule to limit the economic and operational impact on OPG. This role helps make sure VBO/VBI work is planned and executed correctly and on time.
This is an operations-focused, hands-on position. The successful candidate will be in the field and in the control room environment, helping drive work execution in person. It is not an oversight, advisory or people-management role.
What we are looking for:
OPG wants a worker, not a manager. The ideal candidate is a former licensed Control Room Operator (CRO) with Darlington Unit Zero experience, who can walk down systems, work permits and work orders, and drive execution in person.
Candidate profile:
- Darlington Unit Zero experience and a previously held CRO licence (ideal)
- Previously licensed CRO with comparable Unit Zero experience (Bruce Power Unit Zero is considered comparable)
- Prior Authorized Nuclear Operator (AO / A&O) experience
- Prior Control Room Shift Supervisor (CRSS) experience
Licensing: any CRO, AO or CRSS licence must be previously held. A current licence holder would need to surrender their licence.
Retirees welcome
Key Responsibilites
- Assess VBO/VBI work: evaluate tasks, processes and systems for safety, efficiency and compliance with regulatory standards
- Perform field walk-downs of systems and equipment in support of outage work
- Work hands-on with permits, the permit tree and work orders
- Engage directly with control room staff and the station team to drive work execution in person
- Support risk assessment, task evaluation, performance monitoring, regulatory compliance and inspections
- Help ensure VBO/VBI work planning and execution is completed correctly and on time
Qualifications
Required
- CANDU operations experience, ideally Darlington Unit Zero (Bruce Power Unit Zero considered comparable)
- Knowledge of control, mechanical or civil technology sufficient to understand the assembly, function, operation and mechanics of applicable equipment, systems and materials
- Hands-on field and work-execution experience: walk-downs, permits and work orders
- Comfortable working in the control room and field environment
- Available full-time for the 12-month assignment
Assets
- Previously held licensed operations position (CRO strongly preferred; AO / A&O or CRSS also considered)
- Experience assessing and planning station work from an operations perspective
- Engineering management experience with Reactor Safety (as a supporting asset only, not in place of hands-on operations experience)
Work Location:
The role is based on site at Darlington Nuclear, 1 Holt Rd. The Manager is willing to be flexible on the 100% on site requirement.
Strong in-person presence is still expected. The work is field- and control-room-based, and the team wants someone actively engaged on site. Candidates looking for a mainly remote or part-time arrangement are not a fit.
