POSITION OVERVIEW
The Assistant Financial Controller is a hands-on accounting and finance professional responsible for supporting the company’s day-to-day financial operations, reporting, budgeting, costing, inventory management, and internal controls. Working closely with the CFO and operational teams, this role provides accurate financial information and analysis to support business decisions and maintain strong financial controls.
Experience in a food manufacturing or CPG environment, particularly with inventory, standard costing, and manufacturing financial processes, is strongly preferred.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
Accounting & Financial Reporting
- Support full-cycle accounting, including journal entries, general ledger reconciliations, accruals, and account analysis.
- Prepare monthly, quarterly, and annual financial reports and statements in accordance with applicable accounting standards.
- Perform financial and operational variance analysis and prepare reports for management review.
- Prepare vendor cheques and ensure payments are processed accurately and on a timely basis.
- Maintain and analyze standard costs for raw materials, packaging, labour, and finished goods.
- Monitor inventory transactions and work with Production, Warehouse, Purchasing, and Supply Chain teams to maintain accurate inventory records.
- Reconcile inventory sub-ledgers to the general ledger and investigate variances between physical and system inventory.
- Support BOM costing, inventory valuation, production costing, and cost variance analysis.
- Assist with annual budgeting, forecasting, and financial planning processes.
- Prepare financial analysis and management reports to support operational and business decisions.
- Monitor actual results against budgets and forecasts and investigate significant variances.
- Provide financial insights related to costs, margins, inventory, and operational performance
- Support the development, implementation, and maintenance of effective financial controls and accounting procedures.
- Maintain accurate financial records and supporting documentation.
- Identify control gaps and support process improvements to strengthen financial accuracy and efficiency.
- Identify opportunities to improve financial workflows, reporting accuracy, and accounting efficiency.
- Perform other accounting and financial duties as assigned by the CFO.
QUALIFICATIONS & EXPERIENCE
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field.
- 5+ years of progressive accounting experience, preferably in food manufacturing, manufacturing, or CPG.
- CPA designation or progress toward CPA designation is an asset.
- Strong knowledge of standard cost accounting, inventory valuation, BOM costing, and manufacturing accounting.
- Hands-on experience with QuickBooks.
- Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Excel, financial modelling, and data analysis.
- Experience with ERP or accounting system implementation and process improvement is an asset.
