Role Description
The Music Supervisor is a contract-based hybrid role in Toronto, ON, overseeing the music process for feature film, television, and commercial projects, from early creative direction through final cue sheet delivery. Cuenion's composers write original score for most of our projects, but not every scene calls for something built from scratch. This role weighs in on musical direction during spotting sessions, alongside the director, composer, and Music Editor, then owns everything that follows: sourcing, negotiating, clearing, and documenting the music that makes it to picture. Cuenion also owns a catalog of exciting contemporary classical music to be licensed for projects.
Creative & Spotting
- Participate in spotting sessions with directors, producers, and Cuenion's composers to identify where a scene calls for original score, a licensed track, or both
- Source and recommend on-budget, on-brief music options, including tracks from Cuenion's own original catalog when a needle-drop fits
- Flag licensing feasibility and cost early, before a director's temp choice becomes a locked-in expectation that's expensive or impossible to clear
- Work closely with Cuenion's Music Editor, who handles the technical placement of temp and final music in the cut, to keep creative direction and editorial execution aligned
Licensing & Clearance
- Source, negotiate, and secure quotes, rights, licenses, and approvals from labels, publishers, and rights holders, including master and synchronization rights and any applicable union re-use fees
- Maintain detailed music budgets and keep producers informed throughout ongoing negotiations
- Track and prepare cue sheets and credit lists, ensuring every use is cleared and documented before delivery
Coordination
- Coordinate with composers and the Post-Production Coordinator so music delivery stays aligned with the rest of the sound post schedule
- Maintain an organized, current music library and licensing paper trail across multiple concurrent projects
Qualifications
- Proven experience as a music supervisor for film, television, advertising, or digital media
- Strong working knowledge of music licensing and publishing: sync and master rights, union re-use fees, negotiating usage fees, and preparing cue sheets
- Comfort working alongside a Music Editor and composers, understanding where supervision ends and editorial execution begins
- Familiarity with sync licensing platforms and music databases
- An ear for contemporary classical and genre-adjacent music is a strong asset given Cuenion's compositional focus
- Strong organizational skills and the ability to manage licensing paperwork and budgets across multiple concurrent projects
- Diplomatic, clear communication for negotiating directly with rights holders, labels, and publishers
- Post-secondary education in music, audio production, media, or equivalent professional experience
