Flavor Cape Breton was established in 2008 and has grown to serving Cape Breton with four restaurant locations and catering operations. With our extensive experience, Flavor aims to always exceed customer expectations as well as take all the work and stress out of any style of event. We are the best off-site catering team in Nova Scotia. We personalize, we customize, and we make adjustments without any issue. Our goal is to make guests lifelong customers.

Restaurants: Open for dine-in, take-out, and private event rentals, Flavor fulfills customers’ fine dining needs. Flavor on the Water and Flavor 19 operate year-round. Flavor 828 at the Marina operates from May to October annually, and Flavor Top Shelf operates October to May.

Catering: Flavor has established itself as the premiere catering company on the East Coast of Canada. We specialize in providing gourmet cuisine, at a fair price and with exceptional service.

About The Position

Flavor Cape Breton is seeking three full-time, permanent Cooks to prepare and cook food for restaurant and catering operations. Successful candidates may work at one or more of the employer's locations in Sydney, Ben Eoin or Glace Bay, depending on operational requirements.

Main Duties

The Successful Candidate Will Perform The Following Job Duties

Prepare ingredients and organize food items needed for daily restaurant and catering service
Prepare and cook menu items according to established recipes, presentation standards and service requirements
Coordinate food preparation with other kitchen team members to ensure orders are completed efficiently and consistently
Prepare food for restaurant service, private events and catering functions as required
Monitor food supplies during preparation and notify the kitchen manager or chef when ingredients or supplies need to be replenished
Follow established procedures for food storage, handling, temperature control and kitchen sanitation
Keep food preparation areas, equipment and workstations clean and organized throughout the shift
Assist with preparation and execution of daily or event-specific menu items and specials
Assist the chef or kitchen manager with portioning and other preparation tasks as required
Provide direction to kitchen helpers or other staff when assigned
Communicate with front-of-house staff, management and other kitchen staff regarding orders, timing, menu items and service requirements
Adapt food preparation and service to the operational needs of the restaurant or catering event

Employment Requirements

Education: Completion of secondary (high) school; Education in a culinary or hospitality management program required or several years of commercial cooking experience
Experience: 1-3 years’ experience in restaurant, hotel, commercial food preparation, or catering setting (cooking, plating, team coordination) preferred
Language: Applicants must have sufficient English language ability to understand recipes, food safety procedures, workplace instructions and communicate with kitchen and front-of-house staff
Certification: Safe Food Handling Certification an asset (must be willing to obtain Safe Food Handling Certification if not obtained)

Skills And Qualifications

Ability to work in a fast-paced kitchen environment
Ability to work under pressure and meet service deadlines
Strong communication and comprehension skills
Ability to multitask and prioritize tasks
Ability to bend, stand, and stoop for long periods of time
Ability to work long hours in hot conditions
Ability to lift up to 50 lbs
Ability to work at one or multiple locations as required (location(s) determined at time of hiring)

Terms of Employment

Wage: $17.00-19.00 per hour
Hours: 30-40 hours per week
Schedule: May include mornings, afternoons, evenings, weekends, and holidays according to restaurant and catering operations
Start Date: As soon as possible
Employment duration: Permanent
Vacation: Vacation 4%
Overtime: Overtime may be required/available during peak periods
