What you will do
The Facilities Supervisor leads the day-to-day operation, maintenance and safety of Det’on Cho buildings, properties, grounds and building systems. The role supervises the facilities team and contractors to keep workplaces and properties safe, functional, compliant and cost-effective, and provides responsive, professional service to employees, tenants and business units across the Group.
Success in this role means buildings that work reliably, a preventive-maintenance program that reduces emergency repairs, contractors who are managed to standard, a team that works safely, and business units that trust Facilities to respond.
A Day in the Life
Facilities Operations & Maintenance
- Oversee day-to-day building maintenance and groundskeeping activities.
- Establish and maintain preventive-maintenance schedules.
- Ensure routine building and grounds inspections are completed.
- Review recurring maintenance problems and identify corrective or preventive actions.
- Coordinate seasonal maintenance and building-readiness activities.
- Oversee snow and ice management, winterization and extreme-cold preparedness.
- Monitor building conditions and identify emerging maintenance requirements.
- Support maintenance planning and lifecycle management of facilities and equipment.
- Coordinate emergency and urgent facilities responses
- Performance of some hands-on tasks like minor light fixture repairs
Work Planning & Prioritization
- Receive, review and prioritize facilities work requests.
- Assign work to the Lead Hand and Facilities Maintenance Workers.
- Balance emergency, safety-critical, urgent, routine and planned maintenance.
- Monitor outstanding work orders and follow up on incomplete work.
- Maintain appropriate maintenance records and reporting.
- Identify recurring problems and opportunities to reduce reactive maintenance.
Contractor & Trade Coordination
- Determine when work requires a qualified contractor, specialist or regulated trade.
- Coordinate contractor access and facilities requirements.
- Ensure contractors receive appropriate site and safety information.
- Monitor contractor activities from an operational perspective
- Confirm work has been completed and outstanding deficiencies are addressed
- Support contractor performance monitoring and service-provider relationships.
- Assist with scopes of work and obtaining quotations as required
Leadership & Employee Development
- Establish clear expectations for safety, quality, service and accountability.
- Provide daily leadership direction to Facilities employees
- Coach employees and provide ongoing feedback.
- Conduct Facilities Skills Assessments using the approved assessment framework.
- Develop Individual Development Plans with employees.
- Provide practical development and stretch assignments.
- Conduct 90-day, six-month and annual development reviews.
- Support career development of Facilities employees.
- Identify formal training and facilities-management education needs.
- Manage attendance, performance and conduct of direct reports with HR guidance, in line with the People Core Process.
Safety & Compliance
- Ensure appropriate hazard assessments and safe-work procedures are followed.
- Promote safe work practices and compliance with organizational safety requirements.
- Reinforce role boundaries for regulated and restricted work.
- Ensure employees stop and escalate work outside their training, authorization or scope.
- Work collaboratively with Safety/HSE on mandatory safety training, incident follow-up and applicable regulatory requirements.
Budget & Asset Management
- Support development of facilities operating and maintenance budgets.
- Monitor maintenance expenditures within assigned authority.
- Identify repair-versus-replacement considerations.
- Support lifecycle planning for facilities and equipment.
- Identify upcoming capital and major maintenance requirements.
- Recommend practical facility improvements based on operational needs.
- Other related duties as assigned, consistent with the purpose, level and authorized scope of the position.
What You Bring
- A college or university program in electrical or mechanical engineering or in another discipline related to building maintenance
- 3- 4 years experience in facilities maintenance, building operations, property maintenance or a related environment
- Certification such as: Facilities Management Certificate (FMC), Building Systems Maintenance Certificate (SMC) would be an asset
- Previous supervisory, lead-hand or team-lead experience preferred.
- Demonstrated knowledge of general building maintenance and preventive-maintenance practices.
- Experience coordinating contractors and service providers.
- Experience with work-order or maintenance-management systems.
- Strong planning, organization, communication and problem-solving skills.
- A valid driver’s licence
- Familiarity with Yellowknives Dene language, culture and way of life would be considered an asset
- The successful candidate will be required to provide a clear Criminal Record Check (CRC) as a condition of employment. Due to the nature of this role, this position requires unescorted access to private tenant spaces, mechanical rooms, and secure facility infrastructure
Required Skills
The incumbent would normally be expected to have gained the required competencies through completion of a bachelor’s degree and/or diploma in Computer Science, Information Systems, Business Administration, or a related field. An equivalent combination of education, professional certification, and relevant experience may be considered.

NOTICE:
DCMLP generally operates five days per week, seven and a half hours per day. Employees must understand that operational requirements may require changes to schedules, shifts, or work assignments. Travel within the NWT and Canada will be required. In addition, business needs determine work hours and may require some weeks to exceed thirty-seven and a half hours.
