Job Title: Java Developer
Duration: 06 Months Contract to Hire
Type: 3 days/week onsite (hybrid)
Location: Mississauga, ON
About the Role:
- We're looking for a senior, architect-level engineer who can sit alongside our front-office users, including underwriters, bankers, and business stakeholders, and turn their needs into reliable, well-designed software. You'll be embedded with the business, owning solutions end to end: understanding the problem, designing the architecture, and building and shipping the work. The role is heavily backend, with enough front-end fluency to deliver complete solutions. You'll also use AI-assisted development tools (such as Devin and GitHub Copilot) to move faster without lowering the quality bar.
What You'll Do:
- Work directly with underwriters, bankers, and other front-office stakeholders to understand workflows, pain points, and requirements
- Translate business needs into scalable technical architecture and clear designs
- Design and build backend services and APIs, primarily in Java and Spring Boot
- Build and enhance user-facing features in Angular (or React) to deliver complete, usable solutions
- Model and manage data across relational and NoSQL stores (Oracle, MS SQL Server, MongoDB)
- Use AI coding tools to accelerate development, testing, and documentation, and review AI-generated output critically
- Set technical direction, conduct design and code reviews, and mentor other engineers
- Communicate trade-offs, timelines, and risks clearly to both technical and non-technical audiences
- Support solutions in production and iterate quickly based on user feedback
Required Qualifications:
- Significant experience as a senior or architect-level software engineer, with a track record of designing and delivering production systems
- Strong backend expertise in Java and Spring Boot (REST APIs, microservices, security, performance tuning)
- Hands-on experience with Oracle and/or MS SQL Server, plus MongoDB
- Working knowledge of front-end development, with Angular preferred and React also welcome
- Practical experience with AI-assisted development tools such as Devin and GitHub Copilot
- Excellent communication skills and comfort working directly with business users, including senior stakeholders
- Ability to work independently, manage ambiguity, and own outcomes
Preferred Qualifications:
- Proficiency in Python for services, scripting, or data work
- Experience in financial services, banking, or underwriting environments
- Prior forward-deployed, solutions engineering, or client-facing technical roles
- Experience with cloud platforms, CI/CD, and containerized deployments
- Familiarity with event-driven architectures and messaging systems
