Position Overview:
The Critical Response Program serves as a single point of contact for crisis management support for the 13 First Nations communities within the Robinson Superior Treaty Area served by Dilico Anishinabek Family Care, as well as supporting other crisis' affecting Indigenous people in the City of Thunder Bay.
Under the direction of the Program Manager(s), the Critical Response Worker supports prevention, preparedness, intervention, stabilization, and recovery efforts related to critical incidents and emergencies. This includes responding to community and individual crises such as suicide-related concerns, self-harm, substance use emergencies, grief and loss, community declarations of emergency, and other traumatic events.
Collaborating with community leadership, health and social service providers, cultural supports, and internal agency programs, the Critical Response Worker delivers timely, culturally safe, trauma-informed, and community-driven services. The position also supports community capacity building through education, awareness, planning, and training initiatives designed to strengthen resilience, enhance emergency preparedness, and promote long-term community wellness.
Qualifications and Requirements:
- Formal education in Social Work, Mental Health and Addictions, Child and Youth Care, Indigenous Studies, Community Services, Psychology, or a related field is considered an asset but is not required.
- Equivalent combinations of education, lived experience, cultural knowledge, volunteer experience, and community involvement will be considered.
- Candidates with a willingness to learn and a strong commitment to helping others are encouraged to apply.
- Relevant certifications or training in crisis intervention, suicide prevention, mental health, substance use, or Indigenous wellness are considered assets.
- Training, mentorship, and professional development opportunities will be provided.
- Previous experience in crisis response, community services, mental health, addictions, outreach, healthcare, social services, or related fields is considered an asset but is not required.
- Experience working with First Nations communities, Indigenous populations, youth, families, or vulnerable individuals is an asset.
- Volunteer, cultural, community leadership, peer support, or lived experience that demonstrates a commitment to helping others will be considered valuable.
- Applicants with transferable skills and a strong interest in supporting community wellness are encouraged to apply.
- On-the-job training and ongoing support will be provided to successful candidates.
- Support community healing, recovery, and post-crisis activities that promote long-term wellness and resilience.
- Build strong working relationships with First Nation leadership, health teams, schools, community agencies, emergency services, and other service providers.
- a Criminal Records/Vulnerable Sector Check is required upon hiring.
- must be able to work flexible hours including during evenings and weekends;
- provide on-call services;
- must be certified in CPR and Standard First Aid;
- must be able to travel regularly, have a valid Ontario Driver’s License and have access to a personal vehicle (Agency vehicle provided during work hours)
Hours of Work: 32.5 hours per week
