About the role
We’re currently looking for a Senior Manager, Indirect Tax to join our Tax team in our Vancouver office. In this role, you will provide strategic and practical advice to a diverse client base on Canadian indirect tax matters, including GST/HST, provincial sales taxes, property transfer tax, BC Speculation and Vacancy Tax, Vancouver Empty Homes Tax, and other federal, provincial and municipal indirect taxes. Experience with customs and duties would be considered an asset.
You will work closely with our Tax Partners, clients and teams across the firm on complex advisory matters, while building strong client relationships and helping to grow DMCL’s indirect tax capabilities. Based in Vancouver, you will also collaborate with Partners and teams across our Surrey, Tri-Cities and Victoria offices.

How you’ll make a difference
- Advise clients on complex indirect tax matters - provide practical advice on GST/HST, property transfer tax, BC Speculation and Vacancy Tax, Vancouver Empty Homes Tax, and other Canadian indirect taxes, including planning, compliance, transactions, reorganizations and other business matters.
- Identify tax risks and opportunities - review client operations and transactions to identify potential exposures, recovery opportunities and strategies to improve indirect tax efficiency.
- Support clients through audits and disputes - assist with CRA and provincial or municipal tax authority audits, assessments, objections and appeals, including preparing technical submissions and correspondence.
- Lead high-quality client engagements - manage indirect tax advisory and compliance engagements from planning through completion, while overseeing timelines, budgets, deliverables and client expectations.
- Research and interpret tax legislation - analyze complex indirect tax issues and translate legislation, case law and administrative policy into clear, practical recommendations for clients.
- Build trusted client relationships - develop a strong understanding of clients’ businesses, anticipate their needs and become a trusted advisor on indirect tax matters.
- Collaborate across the firm - work closely with Partners and teams across our Tax, Private Enterprise, Assurance and Advisory practices, and across our offices, to identify indirect tax considerations and opportunities for clients.
- Help grow the practice - work alongside Partners to identify new client and service opportunities, build relationships in the market and contribute to the continued development of DMCL’s indirect tax offering.
- Build and develop the team over time - as the practice grows, help develop DMCL’s indirect tax team by providing technical guidance, mentorship and coaching to team members.

Who you are
- 6+ years of progressive experience specializing in Canadian indirect tax, preferably gained in public practice within an accounting or law firm; relevant industry experience may also be considered.
- Strong technical knowledge of GST/HST and provincial sales taxes, with experience applying indirect tax legislation to complex business situations.
- Experience with additional indirect tax matters such as property transfer tax, BC Speculation and Vacancy Tax, Vancouver Empty Homes Tax, or similar provincial and municipal taxes is an asset.
- A relevant professional background or designation in accounting, law or tax; a CPA designation is not required.
- Experience managing complex advisory and compliance engagements and working directly with senior client stakeholders.
- Experience supporting clients through tax authority audits, assessments, objections or appeals.
- Strong technical research, analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to interpret legislation and apply it to practical client situations.
- Strong relationship-building and business development skills, with an interest in identifying opportunities and helping grow a specialized practice.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to explain complex tax concepts clearly and practically.
- A collaborative approach and an interest in working closely with Partners, clients and teams across multiple service lines and offices.
- Someone who is curious, entrepreneurial and motivated by the opportunity to help shape, build and ultimately develop a growing indirect tax practice.
