Downie Timber Ltd., located in Revelstoke BC, has a full-time opening for a Head Filer to join our team. We are a forest harvesting and lumber manufacturing company located in Revelstoke and are a proud component of the Gorman Bros. group of companies.
Revelstoke BC, an attractive, historic mountain community located along the TransCanada highway halfway between Calgary AB and Vancouver BC. adjacent to 2 national parks and is known for its world class skiing. This resource-rich area is also well known for its year-round outdoor recreation activities, and quality schools.
We are accepting applications for a Head Filer to join our maintenance team. Reporting to the Maintenance Manager, the Head Filer will provide leadership and oversight of the saw filing department, ensuring safe work practices, high-quality standards, and efficient maintenance operations. This role oversees staff development, scheduling, equipment reliability, and inventory management while collaborating will mill operations to optimize sawing performance, lumber quality, and production efficiency.
RESPONSIBILIES:
- Provide leadership and direct oversight of the saw filing department, ensuring safe work practices, effective task assignment, and accountability for performance.
- Support and implement safety, maintenance, and continuous improvement initiatives.
- Coordinate staffing and scheduling to meet maintenance and production requirements.
- Coach and develop team members, provide technical guidance and oversee ongoing training.
- Ensure filing work meets established quality standards and that maintenance activities are accurately documented.
- Maintain effective communication and coordination between shifts, maintenance personnel, and production teams.
- Address employee performance and relations matter in collaboration with Human Resources.
- Manage filing room inventory, including saws, spare parts, and consumables.
- Troubleshoot, maintain, and calibrate precision saw filing equipment, including automated CNC grinders, stretchers, and specialized measuring instruments.
- Oversee the maintenance, condition, and reliability of filing room equipment, identifying opportunities to improve equipment performance and minimize downtime.
- Establish and maintain filing quality control standards to support consistent lumber quality and optimal sawing performance.
- Diagnose sawing defects and collaborate with mill operations to resolve cutting performance issues, improve cutting accuracy, and maximize equipment reliability.
QUALIFICATIONS:
- Certified Saw Filer with 8-10 years of saw filing experience
- Class 5 Drivers license
- Prior leadership experience is considered an asset
- Excellent problem-solving skills and technical abilities
- Strong planning and organizational skills
- Computer literacy and experience with Microsoft Word and Excel
- Commitment to safe work and experience ensuring compliance with safety programs
Rate of Pay: The hourly rate will depend on the candidate's saw filing certification, ranging from $54.245 - $55.605 per hour.
