Position Information:
Full-time Support Staff Position Opportunity: Temporary Employee Replacement (see Appendix D of collective agreement) September 2026 – October 2027 Payband: K Starting Rate: $47.13 Four Year Rate: $54.48 Department: Faculty of Health Science Hours: 35 hours per week (1) one hour lunch; Mon – Fri (8:30 am – 4:30 pm). Hours may vary earlier or later, depending on the requirements needed. Reporting To: Associate Dean Campus Location: Oshawa
Duties and Responsibilities:
Reporting to the Associate Dean of Health Sciences, the incumbent will act as a resource to professors and students in the design, integration and delivery of simulation-based learning experiences (face to face and virtual) for programs in the Faculty of Health Sciences.
Collaborate with faculty, Associate Dean, and Executive Dean to create, design and deliver a student centred interactive engaging learning experience using simulation as the teaching and learning modality to effectively meet the learning outcomes in
a wide variety of healthcare programs including:
- Design, develop (using specialized software
programming) and deliver simulation based experiential learning sessions face
to face or virtually for healthcare curricula.
- Analyze feedback received from faculty, students,
associate dean, and executive dean related to the simulation learning
experience and determine if modifications are required. If modifications are
required, the incumbent will create or redesign the simulation-based learning
experience.
- Remain knowledgeable of current universal and
instructional design, the principles of adult teaching and learning and using a
wide variety of software to create and deliver interactive virtual and face to
face clinical experiences and feedback surveys.
- Maintain and oversee the Simulation learning spaces,
including setting up and taking down equipment, completing minor repairs on
simulators, troubleshooting issues related to hi-fidelity simulators and
operating systems, preventative equipment maintenance, cost sourcing and
comparison, software and equipment updates, scheduling of the lab space, remain
up to date on current trends related to simulation and simulation equipment
including current literature related to simulation best practices and mentor
new support staff and faculty.
- Develop and deliver educational sessions (in person
or virtually), based on data collected and analyzed by the incumbent of the
learning needs of faculty and support staff. The educational sessions developed
by the incumbent are built based on universal design, adult education
principles and Best Practices of Simulation to increase the knowledge and skill
of faculty and support staff to strengthen their skills as facilitators in the
field of simulation.
- Demonstrate knowledge of nursing theory and
competent nursing psychomotor skills when providing feedback to students and in
analyzing data and creating simulation-based learning session to meet
established criteria.
- Provide technical support for faculty during
simulation-based learning sessions using hi-fidelity simulators and required
software.
- Act as a “facilitator’ interacting with students
during and debriefing students after the learning experience toward
successfully meeting established learning outcomes for the experiential
learning session
- Maintain the simulation web page and clinical
simulation case study database and is responsible for scheduling the simulation
lab learning space
- Participate in research and projects with Durham
College, Ontario Tech U, and outside universities and colleges.
- Act as a resource to other departments in both the
college, university and community
- As a shared responsibility with the Durham College
and Ontario Tech U simulations specialist works with students from the work
study program and provides tasks to the students i.e. timelines, ensures safety
etc.
- Participate in meetings, committees, and events
relevant to simulation and healthcare education
- Other duties as assigned.
Qualifications:
- A minimum of a 4-year
degree in Nursing and current Certificate of Registration with the College of
Nurses of Ontario.
- Degree in Adult Education would be an asset.
- Certification in Healthcare
Simulation (e.g., Certified Healthcare Simulation Educator - CHSE)
- A minimum of 5 years of
work experience in nursing experience in a variety of health care
settings, including acute care hospital, long-term care and community service.
- Two or more years of experience
in working with post-secondary students in a lab and/or clinical setting.
- Minimum of 2-3 years of
experience in healthcare simulation, including scenario development, simulation
delivery, and debriefing.
- Demonstrated knowledge and
competency in instructional design, programming, instructional use of and
maintenance of a variety of equipment and technology including, but not limited
to patient simulators.
- Demonstrated knowledge of
principles of adult education and teaching methodology and using technology to
support teaching and learning.
- Experience in curriculum
development and assessment.
- Demonstrated knowledge of Best
Practice Standards: Simulation
- Proficient in the operation and troubleshooting of
high-fidelity manikins (e.g., Laerdal, CAE Healthcare).
- Experience with simulation software and audiovisual
equipment.
- Proficient in Microsoft Office
Suite and learning management systems.
- Ability to adapt to changing
technology and educational environments.
- Excellent interpersonal skills, creativity,
organizational and planning skills.
- Strong analytical and
problem-solving skills.
- Ability to work co-operatively
with minimal supervision.
- Demonstrated ability to work
effectively in a team-oriented environment.
- Demonstrated time management
skills.
- Ability to do effective
demonstrations to small groups.
- Ability to work effectively with
a variety of stakeholders including students, faculty, support staff,
administrators, other departments within the post-secondary system, and
external sales and service representatives.
- Demonstrated knowledge of and
research experience.
- Ongoing participation in
professional development opportunities related to simulation and healthcare
education.
