Job Description
Senior Transportation Engineer is responsible for leading the planning, design, and delivery of transportation infrastructure projects in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada. This position operates within a multidisciplinary engineering environment and provides technical leadership across roadway engineering, traffic studies, transportation planning, field investigations, and client engagement activities.
The role supports projects through multiple delivery phases, including preliminary design, detailed engineering, technical review, construction support, and stakeholder coordination. Responsibilities include regulatory compliance, technical reporting, cost estimating, design review, and coordination with municipal and provincial transportation authorities.
The ideal candidate brings 10+ years of consulting experience delivering transportation projects for Alberta Transportation and municipal clients, strong knowledge of applicable design standards and construction specifications, and demonstrated capability leading project teams while mentoring junior engineering professionals.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead transportation engineering projects through planning, design, delivery, and project closeout.
- Perform and review roadway design packages in accordance with applicable transportation engineering standards.
- Prepare and review traffic impact studies and transportation planning documentation.
- Coordinate project delivery with multidisciplinary teams to support integrated engineering solutions.
- Develop detailed engineering drawings, plans, and specifications using engineering design software.
- Conduct field investigations, site assessments, and data collection activities to support project development.
- Prepare technical reports, cost estimates, design documentation, and project records.
- Provide technical mentorship and engineering guidance to junior team members.
- Ensure compliance with transportation regulations, design guidelines, construction specifications, and quality requirements.
- Participate in client meetings, technical presentations, and stakeholder coordination activities.
- Monitor industry developments, engineering practices, and transportation technologies.
- Support business development through proposal writing, technical submissions, and professional networking.
- Maintain compliance with Health, Safety, and Environmental (HSE) requirements and workplace safety procedures.
- Participate in mandatory safety training and related compliance initiatives.
Qualifications
Required
- Bachelor's degree in civil engineering.
- Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) designation in Canada.
- Minimum 10 years of progressive consulting experience delivering transportation engineering projects.
- Experience completing projects for Alberta Transportation and/or municipal clients.
- Demonstrated knowledge of Alberta Transportation design guidelines and construction specifications.
- Ability to interpret survey plans, engineering drawings, and technical documentation.
- Strong field negotiation, technical problem-solving, and decision-making capabilities.
- Experience working within multidisciplinary project teams.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills in English.
- Strong attention to detail and ability to develop practical engineering solutions.
- Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a project environment.
- Willingness and ability to travel, including occasional evening and weekend commitments.
- Valid driver's license.
- Access to a registered and insured vehicle.
- Ability to provide a three-year driver abstract with two or fewer minor incidents and no major incidents.

- Proficiency with AutoCAD Civil 3D.
- Additional experience supporting transportation infrastructure projects through construction-stage activities.
- Experience mentoring and developing junior engineering staff.
- Demonstrated proposal development and business development experience.
