Overview
We are seeking a skilled and compassionate Registered Nurse (RN) to join our team as Nursing Supervisor. The successful candidate will provide high-quality nursing care and services to clients while also providing day-to-day leadership and supervision to the nursing team.
The Nursing Supervisor is a working supervisor position and remains actively involved in direct client care as part of the nursing team. The incumbent will regularly complete nursing shifts and provide hands-on nursing care, including assessments, medication administration, monitoring, documentation, health education, care coordination, and response to emerging client needs.
Team-oriented and collaborative, the Nursing Supervisor will be a key member of the Leadership Team, providing oversight to all nursing staff in all aspects of nursing practice and client care and is accountable for nursing resource utilization, professional practice, client experience, staff performance, engagement, and the safe and effective delivery of nursing services.
The Nursing Supervisor works collaboratively with the Executive Director, Clinical Supervisor, physicians, Nurse Practitioners, addictions counsellors, Mental Health & Addictions Support Workers, and other members of the interdisciplinary team to support integrated, person-centred, trauma-informed, and recovery-oriented care.
Nursing Leadership and Supervision
- Provide day-to-day leadership, supervision, coaching, and clinical guidance to the nursing team.
- Promote safe, competent, ethical, and evidence-informed nursing practice in accordance with the standards of the College of Nursing of New Brunswick (CNNB), applicable legislation, and organizational policies.
- Oversee and delegate tasks to other nursing staff, as appropriate and within individual scopes of practice and competence.
- Provide consultation and support to nursing staff regarding complex client presentations, changes in condition, clinical concerns, medication issues, and other nursing matters.
- Assist with nursing education, training and mentoring of new nursing staff.
- Coordinate and support the effective orientation and onboarding of new nursing staff.
- Provide guidance and mentorship to other nursing staff.
- Conduct ongoing coaching, performance feedback, goal setting, and performance reviews for nursing staff in accordance with organizational processes.
- Address nursing performance, practice, attendance, or conduct concerns in collaboration with the Executive Director and Human Resources as appropriate.
- Support recruitment, interviewing, selection, and retention of nursing staff as required.
- Support nursing scheduling, vacation planning, shift coverage, and appropriate staffing levels to ensure safe and effective nursing services.
- Function as a liaison between nursing staff and management.
- Lead or participate in nursing team meetings and interdisciplinary meetings and promote effective communication across disciplines and shifts.
- Promote a positive work environment and foster a culture of teamwork and collaboration.
- Identify staff learning and development needs and support continuing education and professional development within the nursing team.
Direct Nursing Care
- Work regular nursing shifts and maintain an active role in the direct delivery of client care.
- Complete comprehensive nursing assessments within RN scope of practice and develop, implement, and evaluate individualized nursing care plans.
- Administer medications and treatments as prescribed by physicians and Nurse Practitioners.
- Monitor clients' physical and mental health status and respond appropriately to changes in condition.
- Monitor clients experiencing substance withdrawal, mental health concerns, concurrent disorders, and other acute or chronic health needs using appropriate clinical assessments and monitoring tools.
- Recognize and respond to medical or psychiatric emergencies, initiate appropriate interventions, and coordinate escalation to physicians, Nurse Practitioners, emergency services, or other health-care providers as required.
- Maintain accurate documentation according to EHN Canada policies, CNNB standards, and applicable legal and professional documentation requirements.
- Collaborate with interdisciplinary team members to develop and implement client care and treatment plans.
- Participate in admissions, ongoing assessments, transfers, discharges, and transitions of care as required.
- Communicate effectively with clients, families, physicians, Nurse Practitioners, and other health-care providers.
- Provide emotional support and education to clients and families within the scope of nursing practice and in accordance with client consent.
- Provide health education regarding medications, physical and mental health, harm reduction, recovery, wellness, and healthy lifestyle practices as appropriate.
- Coordinate external medical appointments, referrals, investigations, and follow-up care as required.
Quality, Safety and Professional Practice
- Support a safe therapeutic environment and ensure nursing practices promote client dignity, privacy, autonomy, and safety.
- Adhere to the behaviours outlined in our policies and procedures that promote client safety.
- Investigate, report, and address client-related incidents and nursing practice concerns, escalating as required.
- Review nursing incidents, medication errors, near misses, and identified risks and support appropriate follow-up and corrective action.
- Monitor the quality and completeness of nursing documentation and provide coaching or follow-up where required.
- Support medication management practices, medication storage, controlled substance processes, and other medication-related procedures in accordance with regulatory and organizational requirements.
- Support infection prevention and control practices and ensure nursing staff adhere to established procedures.
- Participate in quality improvement initiatives and ensure compliance with healthcare regulations and standards.
- Participate in audits, accreditation activities, quality assurance processes, and continuous improvement initiatives related to nursing services and client care.
- Assist with developing and implementing policies and procedures that enhance client care, nursing practice, safety, and staff accountability.
- Maintain knowledge of current nursing standards, legislation, regulatory requirements, and evidence-informed practices relevant to mental health and substance use treatment.
- Other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
- Current registration and licence to practise as a Registered Nurse in good standing with the College of Nursing of New Brunswick (CNNB).
- Holds a BScN.
- Current Basic Life Support (BLS) and CPR certification.
- Knowledge of applicable legislation, professional standards, regulatory requirements, and best-practice guidelines governing registered nursing practice in New Brunswick.
- Minimum of 5 years of nursing experience preferred, with experience in mental health, substance use treatment, withdrawal management, or concurrent disorders strongly preferred.
- Previous nursing leadership, supervisory, charge nurse, or clinical leadership experience is preferred.
- Strong clinical assessment, problem-solving and critical-thinking skills.
- Demonstrated ability to balance leadership and administrative responsibilities with regular direct client care responsibilities.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
- Demonstrated ability to provide effective supervision, coaching, mentorship, and performance feedback to nursing staff.
- Experience with electronic medical records preferred.
- Excellent organizational skills.
- Strong understanding of medication management, client safety, professional accountability, documentation, infection prevention and control, and quality improvement.
- Demonstrated ability to collaborate effectively within an interdisciplinary treatment environment.
- Bilingual proficiency in English and French is required.
