We are seeking a proactive, structured, and hands-on Product Engineer to join our engineering team. As our company scales, we are actively modernizing our engineering infrastructure, standardizing our design processes, and establishing clear operational guidelines.
In this role, you will play a critical part in helping us "clean house" by auditing, standardizing, and organizing our existing CAD library, establishing clean data integrity across our SOLIDWORKS PDM and SYSPRO ERP environments, and building consistency across historical design files. You will work closely with engineering leadership and cross-functional teams (Manufacturing, Sales, and Marketing) to maintain current production needs while establishing robust, standardized processes for the future.
The ideal candidate brings 2–4 years of practical engineering experience, strong CAD discipline, and the initiative to bring order to legacy data while adapting as our operating procedures evolve.
Key Responsibilities
CAD Library Cleanup, Standardization & PDM Integration
- Legacy CAD Audit & Cleanup: Systematically review, update, and validate historical CAD models and 2D drawings to prepare them for migration into the SOLIDWORKS PDM system.
- Standardization & Naming Conventions: Adopt, enforce, and strictly adhere to new standardized part numbering, drawing standards, and file/folder structures to resolve past inconsistencies across legacy design regimes.
- CAD System Improvement: Continuously refine SOLIDWORKS templates, drawing standards, and modeling best practices to prevent future library clutter.
- Format Management: Provide and export alternative file formats (e.g., STEP, IGES, DXF) when required for suppliers, customers, or internal stakeholders.
Process Improvement & Adaptability
- Process Definition: Take initiative in identifying system gaps, proposing workflow improvements, and helping establish standardized engineering operating procedures for a small team.
- Compliance & Ownership: Show strong buy-in to newly established systems and hold a high standard of data discipline across all ongoing and past projects.
3D Design & Production Engineering
- Create and revise 3D parts, assemblies, and detailed production drawings in SOLIDWORKS applying proper GD&T for manufacturing.
- Generate Bills of Materials (BOMs), Engineering Change Notices (ECNs), Bills of Process (BPPs), and installation/assembly instructions.
- Design shop jigs, fixtures, and tooling to support manufacturing and assembly line efficiency.
Systems & ERP Documentation
- Set up and maintain clean, standardized part numbers, BOM structures, and item master data in SYSPRO.
- Keep thorough records of project milestones, backlog tasks, and progress updates, presenting clear reports in weekly product meetings.
Cross-Functional Sales & Marketing Support
- Act as a technical product expert assisting Sales with fit, function, custom modifications, and customer drawing requests.
- Partner with Marketing to provide accurate technical details, dimensions, and specifications for product documentation.
Qualifications & Requirements
Experience & Education:
- Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, Applied Science, or related Technical Field, OR;
- Ontario College Advanced Diploma in Engineering Technology
- 2 to 4 years of hands-on experience in product development or design engineering (experience within office furniture or light manufacturing is strongly preferred).
Technical & Software Skills:
- Proficiency in SOLIDWORKS (3D modeling, complex assembly management, 2D drafting).
- Hands-on experience or familiarity with SOLIDWORKS PDM (file migration, vault management, and metadata standardization).
- Experience setting up and maintaining BOMs/part numbers in SYSPRO (or equivalent ERP systems).
Engineering Fundamentals:
- Demonstrated understanding of standard GD&T, drafting conventions, and modeling best practices.
- Hands-on prototyping, 3D printing (SLA/SLS), sample fit checking, and product testing experience.
- Familiarity with common manufacturing processes (sheet metal, injection molding, wood/laminate, mechanical assembly).
Key Attributes & Mindset:
- High Initiative & Ownership: Self-starter who thrives in a small-team environment and takes pride in organizing systems and resolving historical inconsistencies.
- Process-Oriented: Willingness to adhere strictly to new operating procedures while actively suggesting continuous improvements as the department grows.
- Adaptability: Flexibility to adjust to changing workflows as new standards and processes are defined and refined.
- Attention to Detail: Meticulous approach to drawing validation, file structure integrity, and BOM accuracy.
