Maritime Veterinary Emergency + Specialty Centre (MVESC) is hiring a full-time Registered Veterinary Technician (RVT) to join our Cardiology team in Dartmouth, Nova Scotia. This Veterinary Technician position offers the opportunity to build advanced cardiology, anesthesia, patient monitoring, and specialty medicine skills while working alongside veterinary specialists in a state-of-the-art emergency and specialty hospital.

ScheduleResponsibilitiesAs a RVT on the Cardiology team, you will provide high-quality nursing care throughout examinations, diagnostics, treatments, procedures, hospitalization, and recovery.
- Perform and document patient assessments, including temperature, pulse, respiration, blood pressure, ECG/rhythm assessment, oxygen saturation, pain assessment, and other monitoring parameters as directed.
- Assist veterinary cardiologists and veterinarians with cardiology examinations, diagnostics, treatments, and procedures.
- Perform and assist with ECG acquisition and monitoring and prepare tracings for veterinary review.
- Support echocardiography through patient preparation, positioning, handling, equipment maintenance, and procedural assistance.
- Assist with thoracic radiography and other diagnostic imaging, including appropriate patient preparation and positioning.
- Support blood pressure monitoring and other cardiovascular assessments as directed by the cardiologist.
- Assist with cardiac catheterization, interventional procedures, pacemaker procedures, and other advanced cardiology procedures as applicable.
- Assist with sedation and anesthesia, including patient preparation, monitoring, recovery, and documentation.
- Closely monitor sedated and anesthetized patients and promptly communicate changes in patient status.
- Provide nursing care for patients with cardiac disease, monitoring respiratory effort, heart rate and rhythm, perfusion, blood pressure, mentation, and overall clinical status.
- Recognize and promptly communicate arrhythmias, hypotension, respiratory distress, collapse, and other signs of clinical deterioration.
- Assist with oxygen supplementation, emergency interventions, and stabilization of patients experiencing cardiovascular or respiratory compromise.
- Administer medications and treatments as prescribed, with careful attention to dosing, timing, administration routes, and potential cardiovascular effects.
- Establish and maintain IV catheters and assist with fluid therapy, blood collection, and laboratory sample preparation as directed.
- Support continuous and intermittent cardiac monitoring and accurately document findings.
- Maintain timely medical records covering assessments, medications, treatments, diagnostics, procedures, monitoring parameters, and communication.
- Build and maintain SmartFlow treatment sheets and help ensure treatment plans are accurately communicated and followed.
- Assist with patient intake, hospitalization, transfers, and discharge.
- Coordinate patient transfers between Cardiology, Emergency/ICU, Internal Medicine, Surgery, and other specialty departments.
- Provide client education regarding prescribed treatments, medication administration, monitoring, and follow-up care within the scope of the RVT role.
- Communicate professionally and compassionately with clients, referring veterinarians, and members of the hospital team.
- Maintain patient safety, infection control, controlled drug handling, radiation safety, and emergency preparedness standards.
- Keep cardiology and patient-monitoring equipment clean, maintained, organized, and ready for use.
- Collaborate with veterinary cardiologists, veterinarians, RVTs, veterinary assistants, and other specialty and emergency teams to support efficient patient care.
- Provide effective patient handoffs and clearly communicate relevant clinical information.
- Assist with training and mentoring veterinary nursing team members in cardiology procedures and equipment within areas of demonstrated competency.
- Participate in departmental meetings, quality-improvement initiatives, and the development and implementation of cardiology protocols and workflows.
- Help maintain a positive, respectful, collaborative, and professional working environment.
Qualifications- Graduate of an accredited Veterinary Technology program.
- Successful completion of the VTNE.
- Registered Veterinary Technician licensed or eligible for licensure with the EVTA and NSVMA.
- Previous RVT experience in a veterinary hospital, specialty practice, emergency hospital, or referral setting preferred.
- Veterinary cardiology experience is preferred; candidates with strong emergency, critical care, anesthesia, or other specialty medicine experience will also be considered.
- Strong interest in developing advanced Veterinary Technician skills in cardiology and specialty medicine.
- Experience with ECG acquisition and monitoring, blood pressure monitoring, anesthesia/sedation, and patient monitoring is an asset.
- Experience with echocardiography, advanced cardiac procedures, fluoroscopy, or cardiac catheterization is an asset.
- Ability to work effectively in a fast-paced, high-acuity specialty environment.
- Strong technical, organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to prioritize patient care and respond appropriately to changes in patient condition.
- Sound clinical judgment, attention to detail, initiative, and effective problem-solving skills.
- Ability to work independently while contributing effectively to a multidisciplinary veterinary team.
- Proficiency with computer systems; experience with ezyVet and SmartFlow is an asset.
- Commitment to ongoing professional development and continuing education in veterinary cardiology and specialty medicine.
- Fluent English speaking and reading skills required.
