Job Opportunity: Building Services Technician (Permanent)
Reporting to the Manager, Properties and Incubation, the Building Maintenance Technician is responsible for the janitorial, maintenance, and repair services that keep our facilities safe, functional, and welcoming. This role supports the operation of more than 40,000 square feet of specialized space where innovative startups can grow and succeed.
This role is based at The Labs on the Dalhousie campus, a hub for Nova Scotia's life sciences sector. The Labs is home to startup and growing life sciences companies, offering laboratory and office space, onsite support, and opportunities to connect and collaborate with other businesses. Invest Nova Scotia also operates The Bays in Dartmouth, which provides office and light industrial space for clean technology and other innovative businesses.
What You’ll Do
You'll play a hands-on role in maintaining the cleanliness, safety, and overall appearance of our facilities through daily janitorial duties, minor maintenance activities, preventative maintenance support, and timely responses to facility-related requests. You'll also support the day-to-day operation of the facilities by coordinating building-related activities, assisting with event and meeting room setups, responding to resident client and tenant inquiries, maintaining records and documentation, and working with contractors and service providers to help ensure facility issues are addressed promptly and professionally.
What We’re Looking For
- You hold a high school diploma and have 3-5 years of practical experience, or an equivalent combination of training and experience, working with the public and performing building maintenance duties.
- Training in building maintenance or facility management is an asset.
You Also Bring
- Experience with janitorial, and general maintenance practices.
- Knowledge of building maintenance and repairs, including mechanical, plumbing, and electrical systems.
- Understanding of Occupational Health & Safety standards and safe work practices.
- Experience coordinating maintenance activities, maintaining records and documentation, and working collaboratively with internal and external partners.
- Working knowledge of Microsoft Office applications.
- Strong customer service, communication, and relationship-building skills.
- Strong organization, planning, scheduling, problem-solving, decision-making, and troubleshooting abilities.
- Ability to perform physical work, including lifting and carrying materials, tools, and equipment, and working in a hands-on environment that requires bending, kneeling, reaching, and climbing ladders.
