Overview of the Position:
The Service Technician – Mechanical is responsible for diagnosing, repairing, servicing, commissioning, and maintaining industrial power generation equipment and related mechanical equipment. This role performs field and shop-based service work, ensuring equipment is operating safely, reliably, and in accordance with manufacturer specifications. The successful candidate will have strong mechanical aptitude, troubleshooting skills, and the ability to work independently while maintaining a high standard of customer service and support.
Key Duties and Responsibilities:
- Diagnose, troubleshoot, repair, service, and maintain industrial generators, engines, and associated mechanical equipment.
- Provide technical leadership and mentorship to Service Technicians and apprentices.
- Coach and assist technicians with troubleshooting, diagnostics, repairs, and service procedures.
- Assist with the training and development of technicians by sharing technical knowledge, experience, and best practices.
- Identify mechanical faults and determine appropriate repair or corrective action.
- Perform engine, cooling, fuel, lubrication, exhaust, starting, and other mechanical equipment repairs.
- Assist with the installation, commissioning, startup, and testing of power generation equipment.
- Conduct load bank testing and equipment performance testing as required.
- Review work performed by less-experienced technicians and provide guidance to ensure repairs and service work meet Company and manufacturer standards.
- Perform preventive maintenance and inspections in accordance with manufacturer specifications and service requirements.
- Communicate equipment conditions, identified deficiencies, required repairs, and recommendations to customers and internal teams.
- Complete service reports, inspection reports, work orders, and other required documentation accurately and promptly.
- Work closely with service department personnel and other departments to coordinate service requirements.
- Maintain service vehicles, tools, equipment, and inventory in a safe and organized condition.
- Maintain current knowledge of equipment, service procedures, diagnostic methods, and manufacturer requirements.
- Lead by demonstrating safe, professional, and high-quality work practices.
- Travel to worksite to complete repairs and preventative maintenance work, as required
- Perform other related duties as assigned.
Experience and Qualifications:
- Must hold Journeyperson certification as a Heavy Equipment Technician. Red Seal endorsement is considered an asset.
- Minimum 3 years of mechanical service, maintenance, or troubleshooting experience, preferably with industrial equipment, generators, engines, or power generation equipment in a mentorship or leadership role.
- Prior experience troubleshooting and problem-solving John Deere and/or Kubota engines is required.
- Prior experience with Mitsubishi engines or competitor brands, as well as Blue Star generator and control equipment, is an asset.
- Strong mechanical aptitude and demonstrated ability to diagnose and troubleshoot complex mechanical equipment.
- Experience working with diesel and natural gas engines.
- Demonstrated ability to provide technical guidance, mentorship, and on-the-job training to less-experienced technicians and apprentices.
- Strong understanding of mechanical equipment, including cooling, lubrication, fuel, exhaust, starting, and related engine equipment.
- Ability to read and interpret mechanical drawings, schematics, manuals, and technical documentation.
- Experience using diagnostic tools, meters, gauges, and other mechanical testing equipment.
- Strong communication, interpersonal, organizational, and customer service skills.
- Ability to lead by example and promote a positive, collaborative, and safety-focused work environment.
- Valid Class 5 driver's licence with a good driving record.
- Ability to travel to customer sites and work occasional overtime, evenings, or weekends as required.
Work Environment: A Service Technician - Mechanical will occasionally be required to perform repetitive motions, including lifting, squatting, kneeling, bending, walking, torquing, pulling, carrying, pulling, crouching, backward positions, standing for extended periods, etc.
Physical Job Requirement: This position requires occasional lifting of objects weighing up to 50 lbs. throughout a workday.
