Role Description The Paint and Coating Chemist will work on-site in Barrie, ON in a full-time capacity, focusing on the formulation, testing, and improvement of thermoplastic marking products. Day-to-day responsibilities include designing and optimizing paint and coating formulations, conducting laboratory experiments, performing analytical testing, and evaluating product performance against industry standards. The role involves collaborating with production and quality teams to ensure consistent product quality, troubleshooting manufacturing or application issues, and supporting scale-up from lab to plant. The chemist will contribute to research and development initiatives, document test results and technical data, and assist in maintaining safety and regulatory compliance within the laboratory and production environment. The position also requires ongoing assessment of new raw materials and technologies to enhance product durability, application characteristics, and sustainability.
Qualifications
- Strong laboratory skills in paint, coatings, or polymer systems, including formulation, mixing, and safe handling of chemicals.
- Quality control experience, including routine testing, data recording, and adherence to standards for consistency and compliance.
- Analytical skills to interpret test results, troubleshoot performance issues, and apply problem-solving methods to improve formulations.
- Research and Development (R&D) and research capabilities, including designing experiments, evaluating new materials, and supporting innovation projects.
- Bachelor’s degree or higher in Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, Materials Science, or a related field.
- Experience with paints, coatings, thermoplastics, or related industrial products is strongly preferred.
- Familiarity with relevant testing equipment and methods (e.g., viscosity, adhesion, hardness, weathering, and color measurement).
- Ability to work safely in a laboratory and plant environment and follow established health, safety, and environmental protocols.
- Effective communication skills for documenting results and collaborating with cross-functional teams in production and quality assurance.
- Strong organizational skills and attention to detail, with the ability to manage multiple projects and meet deadlines.
