The IBM Storage Protect Specialist supports customer backup and IBM Power environments and serves as a Tier 2/Tier 3 escalation point within the Managed Services practice. This hands-on technical role administers IBM Storage Protect, formerly IBM Spectrum Protect / Tivoli Storage Manager, and IBM Power Systems running AIX across multiple client environments. The specialist resolves complex incidents, performs root cause analysis, works directly with customers, and helps ensure that customer data remains protected and systems remain available.
The role operates in a multi-client managed services environment, works to defined service level agreements (SLAs), maintains complete and auditable records in the ticketing system, and participates in a rotating on-call schedule supporting mission-critical systems after hours and on weekends.
Responsibilities
Backup and Recovery Administration
- Design, administer and maintain IBM Storage Protect / Spectrum Protect / TSM servers, Oracle (RMAN) / Microsoft SQL Server and VMware including daily backup operations, database and storage pool maintenance, and activity log review.
- Monitor and maintain backups and drive issues through to resolution.
- Lead and support disaster recovery testing, restore validation, and documentation of recovery procedures.
- Perform capacity planning for backup storage growth and advise customers on retention and infrastructure changes.
IBM Power Systems Administration
- IBM Power Systems administration and installation of IBM I, Linux and AIX, including LPAR creation and management, dynamic LPAR operations, and Live Partition Mobility.
- Administer Virtual I/O Server (VIOS), including Shared Ethernet Adapter, NPIV, and virtual SCSI configurations.
- Manage SAN connectivity, multipathing (MPIO), Logical Volume Manager (LVM) operations, and filesystems.
- Monitor and tune performance using tools such as topas, nmon, vmstat, iostat, and sar.
- Support PowerHA (HACMP) and, where present, GPFS / Spectrum Scale.
Day 2 Operations Support
- Manage customer-facing incidents, changes, and service requests through resolution by communicating status clearly, maintaining accurate SLA-aligned records, and coordinating IBM Support or vendor engagement as needed.
- Create and maintain runbooks, knowledge articles, and standard operating procedures to improve consistency and enable lower-tier resolution.
- Participate in a rotating on-call schedule providing after-hours and weekend coverage for mission-critical customer systems.
Requirements
Education: Post-secondary education in computer science, information technology, engineering, or a related discipline, or an equivalent combination of education, technical training, and relevant experience.
Years of Experience: 5+ years administering IBM Storage Protect / Spectrum Protect / Tivoli Storage Manager in enterprise environments and 5+ years administering AIX on IBM Power Systems.
Technical Skills / Tools:
- Hands-on administration of IBM Storage Protect / Spectrum Protect / Tivoli Storage Manager.
- Hands-on IBM Power Systems, including AIX, Linux, IBM I, PowerVM, LPARs, VIOS, and HMC.
- Working knowledge of SAN storage, multipathing, AIX LVM, and filesystem administration.
- Experience with TDP / Data Protection agents for at least one of Oracle, Microsoft SQL Server, or VMware.
- Ability to perform root cause analysis and resolve complex, multi-system incidents.
- Experience working to SLAs in a ticketing / ITSM system (ServiceNow) and following incident, change, and problem management processes.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills, including direct customer communication.
Additional Requirements
- Legally eligible to work in Canada.
- Able to work from the Toronto office three days per week.
- Willing and able to participate in a rotating on-call schedule and work occasional evenings and weekends.
- Eligibility to obtain a security clearance is an asset for certain customer engagements.
