Overview
United Wire & Cable, a GCG Company, is seeking a CAD Designer / Technician to join our Engineering & Projects team in Richmond Hill, Ontario. This is a hands-on technical role focused on creating, updating, and maintaining accurate drawings, 3D models, and supporting documentation for electrical and mechanical applications.
In this role, you’ll work closely with our project management / engineering team to translate specifications, sketches, markups, and existing systems into clear, production-ready CAD documentation. You’ll contribute to both new and existing designs, support drawing and document control, and help ensure technical information is accurate, organized, and aligned with applicable quality standards.
This is a strong opportunity for someone who enjoys detailed technical work, is comfortable working in SolidWorks, and brings a thoughtful, problem-solving approach to design and documentation.
Work Arrangement
This is a hybrid position, based out of our Richmond Hill, Ontario, Canada location.
What You’ll Do
Create detailed drawings, 3D models, components, and assemblies in SolidWorks based on input from engineers and project team members.
Develop dimensioned technical drawings and specify appropriate electrical and mechanical components within project documentation.
Modify and update existing drawings and designs based on markups, specifications, project changes, and technical requirements.
Reverse engineer existing electrical systems and equipment to produce accurate drawings and supporting documentation.
Develop parts lists and bills of material (BOMs) to support engineering, project, procurement, and production requirements.
Read, evaluate, and interpret technical drawings, designs, sketches, and specifications, translating hand drawings and concepts into CAD documentation.
Upload, organize, maintain, and update drawings within the company’s document management system while supporting effective CAD file management and configuration.
Review drawings for accuracy, completeness, and compliance with established CAD and quality standards.
Coordinate CAD-related activities with internal teams as well as consultants, engineers, contractors, and other external partners when required.
Support the development and continuous improvement of CAD work methods, drawing practices, and documentation processes.
Assist with technical drawings and documentation needed for bid and tender packages.
Perform other duties as assigned.
What You’ll Bring
Required Qualifications
Demonstrated ability to create, revise, and interpret technical drawings, 3D models, components, and assemblies using CAD software.
Working knowledge of SolidWorks or the ability to apply comparable CAD experience within a SolidWorks environment.
Strong attention to detail and the ability to produce accurate, organized technical documentation.
Strong problem-solving, planning, and organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple design or drawing priorities.
Effective written and verbal communication skills and the ability to work successfully both independently and as part of a collaborative project team.
A self-directed approach to learning, continuous improvement, and applying new techniques or processes.
Preferred Qualifications
Approximately 3 years of experience in a CAD Technician, CAD Designer, CAD Specialist, or similar technical drafting/design role.
A diploma or degree in engineering technology, architectural design and drafting, engineering, design, or a related discipline.
CAD certification.
Experience working with low- or medium-voltage power distribution equipment, cable management systems, or related electrical applications.
Experience applying engineering specifications or standards such as CSA, NEC, or similar technical requirements.
