Finance Manager - CPA Required
Full-time | Annual base salary: CAD $75,000–$85,000
Reports directly to: Chief Operating Officer
About the opportunity:
Gold’s Gym Calgary is seeking a hands-on Finance Manager to manage accounting and financial reporting across multiple companies and club locations.
Working directly with the COO and supported by one intermediate-to-senior bookkeeper, you will personally prepare accounting work, deliver useful financial information, and develop more efficient processes.
This opportunity suits a resourceful CPA who enjoys solving problems, learning independently, and using technology to improve productivity. Strong Senior Accountants with a completed CPA designation who are ready for their first management role are encouraged to apply.
Key responsibilities:
Accounting and financial reporting
Manage month-end and year-end close across the companies and club locations.
Prepare and review journal entries, bank and balance-sheet reconciliations, accruals, prepaid expenses, fixed assets, and intercompany balances.
Coordinate accounts payable and receivable activities with the bookkeeper and resolve outstanding items.
Prepare financial statements, management reports, and proforma reports using the company’s established methodology.
Explain variances, analyze performance by location, and provide practical recommendations to the COO.
Maintain an organized close calendar and complete supporting documentation.
Consolidation and bank reporting.
Develop a repeatable consolidation process, including consistent account mapping, intercompany reconciliations, and appropriate elimination entries.
Prepare monthly consolidated financial information and supporting schedules for TD following month-end close.
Maintain accurate loan, lease, debt-service, and Maintenance CAPEX schedules.
Perform internal covenant checks using the lending agreement’s definitions, compare results with the bank’s calculations, and investigate differences with the COO.
Prepare reporting packages for COO review and meet applicable bank reporting deadlines.
Cash flow and budgeting.
Prepare and update cash-flow forecasts in close collaboration with the COO.
Monitor cash balances, expected receipts, payroll funding, taxes, debt payments, and vendor commitments.
Recommend actions and execute approved decisions within delegated authority.
Support budgeting, forecasting, and variance analysis with the COO and operating departments.
The COO retains management decisions on cash allocation and payment priorities within the company’s approval framework.
Payroll accounting
Record and reconcile approved payroll transactions, bank withdrawals, and payroll-related accounts.
Allocate labour costs by company, location, and department.
Prepare payroll accruals, analyze variances, and resolve accounting discrepancies with HR and the COO.
Support year-end payroll reconciliations.
HR and the COO manage payroll administration and approval.
CRA and year-end coordination
Manage CRA correspondence, information requests, and follow-up within delegated authority.
Coordinate year-end working papers and tax information with the external accountant.
Prepare supporting schedules, track outstanding requests, and record agreed closing adjustments.
Maintain organized records for tax, bank, and external accounting reviews.
Technology and process improvement.
Identify and implement practical ways to improve productivity through accounting tools, automation, and AI.
Research solutions, test their accuracy, and document repeatable procedures.
Verify calculations and AI-assisted outputs against source records and accounting requirements.
Use company-approved tools and protect confidential financial and employee information.
Teamwork and communication
Guide and support the bookkeeper through clear priorities, timely feedback, and respectful communication.
Work collaboratively with the COO, HR, and operating departments.
Present issues with supporting facts, explain their implications, and recommend solutions.
Maintain open communication and follow established decision-making and escalation procedures.
Qualifications:
Completed Canadian CPA designation in good standing - required.
Strong practical proficiency in QuickBooks Online and Excel.
Experience preparing month-end close, financial statements, reconciliations, and supporting schedules.
Understanding of multi-entity accounting, intercompany transactions, and consolidation principles.
Demonstrated initiative in using technology or AI to improve work quality and productivity.
Ability to research unfamiliar requirements, learn new processes, and follow through independently.
Strong organizational skills, sound judgment, and a collaborative working style.
Experience with multi-location service businesses, CRA correspondence, and bank reporting is an asset. No specific consolidation software is required.
