Gwekwaadziwin Miikan

Gwekwaadziwin Miikan is an Indigenous-led, land-based mental health and addictions program on Manitoulin Island in Northeastern Ontario.

Our continuum of care includes Withdrawal Management, land-based treatment, Live-In Aftercare (LIAC), Community Aftercare with a dedicated transitional aftercare home, and training and workforce development for Indigenous and community-based service providers.

Withdrawal Management provides low-barrier, culturally grounded stabilization and harm reduction and serves as a key entry point into care.

Participants engage in a 90-day, four-season land-based healing process that supports stabilization, cultural reconnection, life skills, and long-term recovery in remote camp environments.

Live-In Aftercare supports the transition to independent living with a focus on relapse prevention, employment and education readiness, and reconnection to family and community.

Community Aftercare extends recovery into home communities through structured follow-up, cultural programming, and supported housing.

We also deliver training, knowledge sharing, and the Indigenous Land-Based Counsellor (ILBC) model to build local capacity for culturally grounded healing services.

Our approach emphasizes Indigenous knowledge systems, cultural safety, risk management in remote settings, measurable outcomes, and cross-sector partnerships to strengthen sustainable recovery and community wellness.
