Role Description The Heavy Equipment Operators (Airside) role is a seasonal, on-site position located at Halifax Stanfield in Halifax, NS. In this role, the operator is responsible for safely operating airside heavy equipment such as snowplows, sweepers, loaders, and other specialized vehicles to maintain runways, taxiways, and aprons. Day-to-day tasks include performing snow and ice control, runway surface maintenance, minor excavation, and support for airfield construction or repair projects. The operator conducts pre- and post-operational inspections, reports equipment issues, and follows established safety, operational, and environmental procedures. This role works closely with operations and maintenance teams, responds to changing weather and airside conditions, and supports 24/7 airport operations, which may involve shift work, weekends, and holidays.
Qualifications
- Strong equipment operation skills with experience in heavy equipment and airside or industrial environments.
- Knowledge of equipment maintenance practices, including basic inspection, troubleshooting, and reporting of mechanical issues.
- Experience with excavation or earthmoving tasks using appropriate heavy equipment.
- Familiarity with used equipment, including safe operation and care of older or refurbished machinery.
- Valid driver’s license; eligibility for airside driving permit and clear driving record.
- Understanding of workplace safety standards, preferably in aviation, construction, or transportation settings.
- Ability to work rotating shifts, including nights, weekends, holidays, and respond to emergency or weather-related events.
- Good communication skills and ability to follow written and verbal instructions in a team environment.
- Physical ability to work outdoors in varying weather conditions and perform tasks that may involve lifting, climbing, and prolonged equipment operation.
- Previous experience in airport operations, municipal public works, or similar heavy equipment roles is an asset.
