Role Description The Designer role at Halstead is a full-time, on-site position based in Calgary, AB. In this role, the Designer develops concepts and detailed designs for custom mattresses and upholstered furniture, translating customer requirements and sales input into accurate drawings and specifications. Day-to-day activities include sales on the retail, whoesale and commercial side creating design layouts, preparing material and fabric selections, collaborating with production teams to ensure designs are feasible, and refining designs based on feedback. The Designer will review prototypes, support quality checks to confirm that finished pieces match design intent, and update documentation or drawings as needed. This role is a customer-facing collaboration to clarify design preferences and provide professional guidance on style, ergonomics, and durability.
Qualifications
- Experience in furniture, interior, industrial, or product design, ideally with custom or upholstery projects.
- Proficiency with design and drafting tools (e.g., CAD software, Adobe Creative Suite, or equivalent) and the ability to produce clear technical drawings.
- Strong sense of aesthetics, materials, color, and fabric selection, with attention to comfort, ergonomics, and usability.
- Ability to interpret customer needs and translate them into practical, manufacturable designs in close collaboration with production teams.
- Excellent communication and collaboration skills, with a focus on working effectively on-site in a manufacturing environment.
- Strong organizational skills and attention to detail for managing multiple custom projects and maintaining accurate documentation.
- Understanding of furniture construction methods, upholstery techniques, and basic manufacturing processes is an asset.
- Diploma or degree in Design, Industrial Design, Interior Design, or a related field, or equivalent practical experience.
