Position: Senior Process Hazard Assessment (PHA) Professional / HAZOP Facilitator
About HOCS Projects
HOCS Projects is a Calgary-based engineering and procurement services company specializing in SAGD and heavy oil facilities. We deliver practical, technically sound engineering solutions through collaborative, experienced multidisciplinary teams.
Position Overview
HOCS Projects is seeking an experienced Process Hazard Assessment (PHA) Professional / HAZOP Facilitator to support engineering projects within the oil and gas industry, particularly SAGD, heavy oil production, steam generation, and brownfield facility modifications.
The successful candidate will be responsible for planning, facilitating, and documenting Process Hazard Assessments, including HAZOP studies, What-If assessments, and other process safety reviews. This role requires strong technical expertise, excellent facilitation skills, and the ability to lead multidisciplinary teams in identifying and mitigating process safety risks.
Key Responsibilities
- Independently plan, lead, and facilitate HAZOP studies, What-If assessments, and other Process Hazard Assessments.
- Lead multidisciplinary engineering and operations teams through structured hazard identification, risk evaluation, and safeguard assessments.
- Review P&IDs, PFDs, process design documentation, control philosophies, and operating procedures in preparation for assessments.
- Identify potential process hazards, operability concerns, failure scenarios, and opportunities for risk reduction.
- Prepare comprehensive PHA reports, risk registers, recommendations, and action tracking documentation.
- Support resolution and closeout of PHA recommendations in collaboration with engineering teams and clients.
- Provide process safety expertise throughout feasibility, DBM, FEED, and detailed engineering phases.
Qualifications & Experience
- Degree or diploma in Chemical Engineering, Process Engineering, or a related technical discipline.
- Minimum 10 years of relevant experience in oil and gas, petrochemical, or industrial processing facilities.
- Proven experience independently facilitating HAZOP workshops involving multidisciplinary engineering and operations teams.
- Experience with PHA software such as PHA-Pro, PHAWorks, or equivalent.
- Excellent communication, technical documentation, leadership, and workshop facilitation skills.
Ideal Candidate
- We are seeking a confident, technically proficient professional with demonstrated experience leading HAZOP assessments - not simply participating in them. The ideal candidate can independently facilitate complex technical discussions, challenge assumptions constructively, identify practical risk mitigation measures, and deliver high-quality PHA documentation.
