Job Overview
Perform library technician duties as assigned by supervisor such as cataloguing resources; maintaining the circulation system; updating, organizing, and promoting a diverse and inclusive physical and virtual collection; and collaborating to support learning in a positive, flexible, and accessible destination.
Key Responsibilities
- Catalogue resources (physical and virtual, including French) according to current industry standards for subject analysis and classification, and the usage and maintenance of authority files (such as :Dewey Decimal Classification, Sears Subject Headings, and their specialized Canadian supplements and counterparts, and MARC [Machine Readable Cataloguing format for automated databases]).
- Maintain an integrated circulation system for Learning Commons resources. Provide instruction and support materials to staff on system library software and circulation procedures for the ongoing use of resources. Create and distribute overdue notices as required. Collect and record fines and replacement costs (lost or damaged resources) as directed by administration and in accordance with HPEDSB procedure.
- Shelve returns, shelf-read to ensure that materials are in the correct order, and tidy shelves. Review the usage and suitability of the Learning Commons collection and discard out-of-date and worn-out materials or repair as needed. Conduct inventory as required. Organize collection, including shifting and catalogue adjustments.
- In alignment with school and system processes; gap analysis; consultation with learners, school staff, and administration; and current literary trends, identify areas of need within the collection. Based on this information, select and purchase new materials, and evaluate donations to support learning. Curate a variety of print, media, digital, manipulative, and visual resources for educators, students, and parents (such as: HPEDSB Vision for a Learning Commons). Formulate budget requests and present to administration. Liaise with vendors as needs arise. Work with office to place orders and check packing slips against orders received to verify contents.
- Process materials: stamp ownership, label and barcode, reinforce bookbinding and cover as needed, insert security strips.
- Provide learners, teachers and community members a safe haven where multiple voices, ideas and contributions are welcomed. Build capacity of staff and learners regarding OPAC (online public access catalogue), virtual learning commons, databases, and other digital resources. Assist learners with the use of library materials, both physical and virtual, and in the development of skills in partnership with the teacher. Gather materials for staff, both physical and virtual, to support learning. Provide readers' advisory services.
- Collaborate with school staff to create a welcoming, engaging Learning Commons space. Facilitate the development of a flexible schedule where the Learning Commons space is always open to concurrent and multiple use and allow time for collection development and maintenance.
- Connect with, inspire, and engage diverse readers. Promote literature and a love of reading through opportunities such as book talks, read aloud, displays, blogs, etc. Coordinate activities as related to the Learning Commons such as clubs, book fairs and author visits.
- Contribute to school newsletter, web page, announcements, etc., as needed. Communicate with staff at staff meetings, through conversation, email, digitally shared documents, etc., as needed. Maintain confidentiality of student information.
- Supervise and assist small groups of students using the Learning Commons (for inquiry, library clubs, open circulation, etc.).
- Collaborate with the administration to recruit, train and supervise adult volunteers.
- Use current technology (computers, tablets, mobile devices, etc.) appropriately and safely. Use specialized equipment (heavy duty and long arm staplers, book binding tape machine, various book repair tools, ladders, barcode scanner, anti-theft security systems, paper cutter, adhesives, etc.) appropriately and safely.
- Perform other duties as assigned by supervisor.
Qualifications
- Two-year college diploma or equivalent in library and information science.
- Over six months and up to one year to become familiar with board policies/procedures and the requirements of the learning commons throughout the school year.
- Ongoing contacts with persons outside the department when contacting book companies, other schools and arranging for book fairs.
- Requires the ability to exercise judgment when operating learning commons and formulating the school library budget.
Work Environment
- Job requires frequent exposure to minor undesirable conditions when working on VDT.
- Frequent close attention when referencing books and performing duties relating to circulations, frequent changes in task when working with students.
- Perform tasks requiring moderate physical exertion such as frequent use of VDT, restocking shelves with heavy books, bending and awkward positions.
