The Position
Hull Services is looking for
Relief Night Counsellors for our Therapeutic Campus-Based Care programs and group homes. This is an awake, overnight position and the hours of work are from 11:00 p.m. to 7:00 a.m.
Reporting to the Program Coordinator, the Relief Night Counsellor’s primary responsibilities are to attend to the health and welfare of the youth and the security of the program and campus. Employees in this classification function as team members of the program and perform essential childcare work as applies to the care, nurturance, and supervision.
Duties And Responsibilities
- Remain alert, observant, and responsive at all times while on duty in this awake position.
- Conduct program rounds to account for all the children and ensure good program order, safety and security.
- Routinely conduct rounds throughout the night at designated intervals and as necessary in situations when increased surveillance of the program and children is warranted, e.g., when there are concerns regarding suicide ideation, self-harm and medical issues.
- Attend to the physical needs and medical requirements of the children.
- Manage crisis in the program, provide support through the utilization of Therapeutic Crisis Intervention during periods of instability. This can include utilizing physical intervention when appropriately trained.
- Provide meaningful and responsible role modelling, as well as direct teaching in areas of grooming, hygiene, dress, nutrition, and social manners.
- Ensure effective follow-through of specific interventions and strategies for each child as per treatment plan and directives.
- Keep apprised of all relevant documentation pertaining to the program and children such as service plans and the night directives manual.
- Maintain an up-to-date bed plan in the night directives manual.
- Record observations and significant information in appropriate reporting formats.
- Report information regarding night events, child count, and all noteworthy/atypical situations and critical incidents to senior staff or other appropriate personnel as required.
- Attend to other administrative tasks as required.
- Within reason, attend to housekeeping tasks.
- Maintain a continuous learning mindset and participate in ongoing professional development activities.
Qualifications And Skills
- Minimum Highschool Diploma.
- Degree or Diploma in Human Services or Social Sciences and/or equivalent work experience is considered an asset.
- Minimum 21 years of age (due to agency insurance requirements for driving).
- Experience in Therapeutic Campus-Based Care treatment or congregate care preferred.
- Ability to engage youth in the treatment process and build therapeutic relationships.
- Demonstrated interest, commitment, consistency, flexibility, and a high level of personal maturity and responsibility.
- Ability to work independently with minimal supervision as well as effectively and cooperatively with co-workers.
- Cross cultural competence; knowledge of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission and the recommendations, goals and activities of the commission.
- A Police Information Check, which includes a vulnerable sector search, is required (or is in process of being completed) prior to employment.
- A Child Intervention Record Check is required upon commencement of employment.
- Reliable transportation, valid driver’s license and ability to drive Agency vehicles is preferred (min. 3 years driving experience with a class 5/GDL class 5 license).
- Completion of ASIST, First Aid, Therapeutic Crisis Intervention and Certified with CYCAA would be considered an asset.
- Excellent interpersonal qualities including flexibility, effective communication and relationship building skills.
- Self-motivated, positive and ability to take initiative.
