Basic Function
The Junior Buyer position is responsible for the procurement of goods, materials, and services to ensure operational and project requirements are met while achieving the best combination of price, quality, and delivery. This role supports strategic sourcing, vendor management, and purchase order administration while ensuring compliance with company policies and procedures.
This position offers an excellent opportunity to develop procurement expertise through hands-on experience, mentorship, and exposure to purchasing activities within a fast-paced construction and project environment.
Qualifications
Education
- CPM, CPSM, CPIM, or equivalent certification is considered an asset; progress toward certification is encouraged.
- Bachelor's degree in Supply Chain, Business, Operations Management, Engineering, or a related field is considered an asset.
- Trade certification in a related field (Powerline Technician, Electrician, Mechanic, etc.) may be considered in lieu of formal education.
- Equivalent combinations of education, trade experience, industry experience, or procurement experience will be considered.
Experience
- 0-3 years of purchasing, procurement, or buying experience within a construction, industrial, or project environment.
Skills
- Demonstrated aptitude for negotiation and supplier engagement.
- Foundational knowledge of procurement practices, Incoterms, contract terms, and supply chain fundamentals.
- Strong analytical, organizational, and communication skills.
- Ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment.
- Working knowledge of Microsoft Excel, including data analysis, Pivot Tables, and VLOOKUPs.
- Knowledge of the Transmission & Distribution industry is considered a strong asset.
- Effective time management and workload prioritization skills.
- Understanding of health and safety practices within a safety-focused construction environment is an asset.
Other
- Valid Class 5 driver's license is considered an asset.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills.
Duties
The following duties are performed in a learning capacity under the guidance of experienced procurement professionals:
- Review and process purchase requisitions and Bills of Materials (BOMs) for accuracy and completeness.
- Clarify specifications, delivery requirements, and technical details with stakeholders as required.
- Prepare and issue formal and informal Requests for Quotation (RFQs).
- Analyze quotations and assist with negotiating pricing, delivery schedules, payment terms, and contract conditions.
- Create and manage purchase orders while tracking and expediting critical materials.
- Support delivery scheduling to meet changing project requirements.
- Monitor supplier performance relating to quality, cost, and on-time delivery.
- Assist in identifying, evaluating, and maintaining approved suppliers.
- Support sourcing initiatives that improve cost, quality, and delivery performance.
- Contribute to cost-reduction and continuous improvement initiatives.
- Maintain accurate purchasing records, pricing data, and vendor information.
- Collaborate with Engineering, Project Management, Operations, Fleet, and Warehouse teams to support project execution.
- Ensure compliance with company policies, quality standards, trade regulations, and ethical sourcing practices.
- Participate in vendor demonstrations and new product evaluations.
