About The Urban Painter
The Urban Painter is a Calgary-based, family-owned and operated professional painting company serving commercial and residential clients. Our mission is to create colourful communities inside and out through professional painting services, a great workplace and community involvement. Having doubled in size over the past two years, we are preparing to expand into Edmonton, with an opportunity to grow our commercial business through relationships with contractors, property managers and other business clients.
About the Role
The Business Development Manager will divide their focus approximately equally between leading our sales team and developing new commercial B2B opportunities. You will coach and support our project consultants, strengthen accountability and improve sales performance, while personally building a pipeline of business clients and referral partners, winning new accounts and developing repeat business.
This is a player-coach role for a commercial sales leader who enjoys developing people and building a territory. You will combine proactive prospecting with a consultative approach, learning how clients plan and award painting work and building relationships that lead to ongoing opportunities. You will bring structure and commercial discipline to a growing business while contributing to a supportive culture where ideas are welcomed.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead, coach and develop the project consultant team through regular one-on-one meetings, sales coaching and individual business development plans, strengthening their ability to identify, pursue and grow commercial accounts.
- Set clear expectations and review weekly KPIs, including prospecting activity, qualified opportunities, conversion rates and revenue performance. Address gaps through constructive feedback and performance improvement plans when needed.
- Help consultants identify decision-makers, build account plans and strengthen their approach to client meetings, proposals, negotiation and repeat business.
- Lead recruitment, onboarding and performance management, and handle team issues and conflict with professionalism and fairness.
- Work with leadership on sales targets, budgets and forecasts, using performance data to identify improvements and support growth.
- Partner with marketing and operations to support targeted B2B outreach, align proposals and client commitments with delivery capacity, and ensure a smooth handoff from sale to project execution.
- Develop and execute a commercial B2B territory plan, prioritizing target accounts, referral channels and opportunities in commercial properties, construction and light industrial markets.
- Personally generate new business through targeted outreach, referrals, networking and client meetings, building a qualified commercial pipeline beyond incoming marketing leads.
- Build relationships with commercial general contractors, property managers, realtors and other referral partners. Understand their project needs, purchasing processes and upcoming work to identify opportunities early.
- Maintain accurate account and pipeline records, forecast opportunities and share insights on client needs and competitors to refine the growth strategy.
