Position Overview
We are seeking a
Data Analyst – Portfolio Performance & Optimization to evaluate and improve the operational and financial performance of Jule’s EV charging network.
You will use programming, financial analysis, and forecasting to turn raw data into reliable insights at the charger, site, and portfolio levels. You will investigate differences between forecast and actual performance, identify underlying causes, and help implement solutions that improve profitability.
A central responsibility is to
develop, prototype, and refine workflows for routine performance and profitability reviews. Once these workflows are validated and sufficiently mature, you will automate them directly or coordinate their handoff to the teams responsible for ongoing operation and software implementation.
Working closely with Product Innovation, Finance, Network Operations, and Software Engineering, you will follow the full improvement cycle:
measure performance, investigate gaps, implement changes, and verify results.
Key Responsibilities2. Programming, Data Preparation & Forecasting3. Performance Gap & Root-Cause Analysis4. Workflow Development, Prototyping & Automation5. Solution Development & Implementation
- Portfolio Performance & Profitability Analysis
- Conduct routine charger-, site-, and portfolio-level performance reviews, including monthly profit-and-loss analysis and comparisons against forecasts, budgets, and prior periods.
- Develop and maintain consistent performance metrics covering utilization, availability, charging activity, energy sales, revenue, operating costs, and site contribution margins.
- Evaluate the drivers of site profitability, including customer demand, pricing, electricity costs, demand charges, equipment performance, maintenance, and site-related expenses.
- Work with Finance to reconcile operational and financial information, validate cost assumptions, and apply consistent allocation methods across the portfolio.
- Use SQL and Python to extract, clean, validate, and combine raw charging, diagnostic, energy, payment, and financial data into structured inputs for reports and models.
- Develop reusable scripts and analytical tools that reduce manual work and improve the consistency, accuracy, and traceability of recurring analysis.
- Build and maintain models to forecast charging demand, energy sales, revenue, operating costs, and profitability, incorporating site characteristics and clearly documented assumptions.
- Use visualizations, scenario modeling, and sensitivity analysis to illustrate expected outcomes, key uncertainties, and the financial implications of potential decisions.
- Evaluate forecast accuracy against actual results and improve models as new data and operating experience become available.
- Identify material differences between forecast and actual results, quantify their financial impact, and prioritize issues for investigation.
- Distinguish data-quality problems and incorrect modeling assumptions from genuine changes in customer demand, equipment performance, operating conditions, or costs.
- Develop and test hypotheses using detailed records, comparisons across sites and periods, and input from engineering, finance, and operations.
- Validate likely causes with the relevant teams, clearly distinguishing confirmed findings from unresolved hypotheses or information gaps.
- Design and prototype repeatable workflows for routine profitability checks, performance reviews, exception reporting, and follow-up analysis.
- Define the data inputs, calculation methods, validation checks, reporting frequency, exception thresholds, and follow-up responsibilities required for each workflow.
- Pilot workflows with intended users, gather feedback, and refine them for accuracy, reliability, usability, and efficiency before wider adoption.
- Automate validated workflows using scripts and scheduled processes where appropriate, and collaborate with Software Engineering when production-system integration is required.
- Prepare mature workflows for handoff through documented logic, test cases, operating instructions, exception-handling procedures, and clearly agreed ownership.
- Monitor workflow performance after implementation and address changing business requirements, data sources, or recurring failures.
- Propose practical solutions to identified performance gaps, supported by an assessment of expected financial benefit, implementation effort, risks, and dependencies.
- Implement improvements within the role’s scope, including revised analytical models, reporting processes, automated checks, decision-support tools, and operating review procedures.
- Coordinate approved cross-functional improvements with the responsible teams, such as changes to pricing, operating practices, maintenance priorities, or software functionality.
- Track actions through completion, measure results against the original baseline, and determine whether the underlying performance gap has been resolved.
- Communicate findings and recommendations through clear dashboards, reports, and presentations that explain what changed, why it matters, what action is recommended, and whether the action worked.
Scope & Collaboration
This role owns the analytical process and the development of performance-monitoring workflows. It is also expected to drive approved improvements through implementation, rather than ending its involvement at the recommendation stage.
Finance retains responsibility for accounting policies and financial reporting approval. Network Operations and Engineering retain responsibility for operational interventions, equipment changes, and production-system releases. The analyst works with these teams to ensure that improvements are implemented appropriately and their impact is measured.
Qualifications
Required
- Bachelor’s degree in Statistics, Data Science, Applied Mathematics, Industrial/Financial Engineering, Engineering Science, Business Analytics, Computational Finance, or a related quantitative field.
- 3+ years of relevant experience in data analysis, operational analytics, business intelligence, financial analytics, or a related role.
- Strong SQL skills, including joining multiple data sources, time-based analysis, aggregation, and investigating incomplete or inconsistent records.
- Hands-on Python skills for data preparation, analysis, modeling, visualization, and workflow automation, using libraries such as pandas and NumPy.
- Demonstrated experience developing a repeatable analytical or reporting workflow, improving it through practical use, and automating it or transferring it to an ongoing owner.
- Working knowledge of profit-and-loss analysis, revenue and cost drivers, contribution margins, and forecast-versus-actual variance analysis.
- Experience building and evaluating forecasts or scenario models, with an understanding of seasonality, uncertainty, and forecast error.
- Strong investigative skills, including the ability to test competing explanations for performance gaps and avoid treating correlation alone as proof of causation.
- Experience contributing to the implementation of a business, analytical, or operational improvement and assessing its results.
- Strong Excel skills and experience presenting findings through Power BI, Tableau, Python-based visualizations, or comparable tools.
- Good documentation, version-control, and testing practices for analytical code and recurring workflows.
- Ability to communicate clearly, coordinate cross-functional work, and follow through on unresolved issues.
- Legal entitlement to work in Canada.
Preferred
- Experience analysing EV charging, energy storage, electricity consumption, connected equipment, or multi-site infrastructure operations.
- Familiarity with electricity tariffs, demand charges, energy losses, asset availability, or site-level operating economics.
- Experience reconciling operational data with payment records, utility bills, or financial reporting systems.
- Experience with time-series forecasting or machine learning, including model validation and comparison against simpler baseline methods. Familiarity with TensorFlow or similar frameworks is an asset.
- Familiarity with AWS-based data environments, scheduled data-processing jobs, or integration with production reporting systems.
- Experience supporting site investment assessments, deployment forecasts, or portfolio-level financial models.
What Success Looks Like
Success means Jule has a reliable, repeatable process for understanding and improving portfolio profitability. Reports require less manual preparation, material performance gaps are identified and explained sooner, forecasts become better grounded in operating evidence, and approved improvements produce measurable results.
Mature workflows are documented, automated where appropriate, and handed over with clear ownership - allowing this role to continue addressing new performance challenges rather than becoming permanently occupied with manual reporting.
What You Will Gain
- Hands-on experience connecting EV charging and energy storage performance with site and portfolio economics.
- Opportunities to develop practical skills in forecasting, financial analysis, workflow automation, and operational improvement.
- Direct exposure to decisions across product, finance, software, and network operations.
- Professional growth toward broader responsibilities in portfolio analytics, asset performance, or operational optimization.
