SUMMARY
As Financial Controller you will own the close and the quality of the numbers behind everything KITS reports as a TSX-listed company: the monthly and quarterly close, the consolidated financial statements, and the accounting that feeds our MD&A and annual audit, across our Canadian and US entities. You will report to the Senior Director, Finance, who leads our TSX filings, the audit relationship, and the internal control framework, and you will run the accounting function that supports all three. You will lead a team of three who report directly to you: a Senior Accountant and two Accountants.
This is a hands-on role. You will review and challenge the numbers, make the IFRS calls, and be the person the Senior Director, the CFO's team, and the auditors look to for how a number was built and whether it can be trusted.
The role suits a designated accountant who has led a team through public company reporting, wants to build a finance function that scales with the business, and cares more that a control works at month-end than that it looks good on paper.
WHAT YOU'LL DO
Lead the accounting function
- Lead, coach, and develop three direct reports: a Senior Accountant and two Accountants.
- Define roles, ownership, and review levels across the team, and hold every close area to a named owner and a due date.
- Set expectations with the Senior Accountant, who owns inventory and cost of goods sold, retail store accounting, and tax compliance, and coach them in guiding the Accountants' daily work.
- Partner with the Senior Director to build depth and capability in an accounting team that will need to grow with the business.
- Run regular one-on-ones, performance conversations, and development plans, and build coverage so no close area depends on one person.
- Build working relationships with Operations, our overseas finance team, and the reporting team so Finance is involved early.
Own the close and the numbers
- Own the month-end and quarter-end close alongside the Senior Director, setting the pace, clearing blockers, and holding the team to a close calendar that gives leadership reliable numbers on time.
- Be accountable for the monthly and quarterly consolidation across Canadian and US entities, including USD/CAD reporting and intercompany accounting.
- Prepare and review the quarterly and annual consolidated financial statements and supporting schedules.
- Assess complex and non-routine transactions under IFRS, document the accounting position, and take it to the auditors and executives.
- Review key balance sheet reconciliations and variance explanations before they reach leadership.
Protect the integrity of our reporting
- Run the internal control framework day to day, in partnership with the Senior Director who designs it, making sure controls are documented, operating, and audit-ready.
- Own the controls over AP, AR, inventory, deferred revenue, and store cash.
- Establish and maintain accounting policies, procedures, and approval levels, and make sure they are followed.
- Test controls ahead of the audit and track remediation to closure.
- Make sure inventory costing across our Canadian and US warehouse locations, store accounting, and accruals are accurate through your team's work, and step in where judgement is needed.
Stand behind the audit and public filings
- Run the annual audit day to day, including the supporting schedules, timetable, and resolution of findings, with the Senior Director as the primary contact for the audit relationship.
- Work with external auditors on quarterly reviews and technical accounting questions.
- Provide the financial content and tied-out numbers for the MD&A, press releases, and TSX filings led by the Senior Director.
- Answer questions from the Senior Director, CFO, and external counsel on the numbers behind our disclosures.
- Stay current on IFRS and public company reporting requirements, and assess what changes mean for KITS.
Keep us compliant across two countries
- Oversee Canadian and US tax compliance and filings, and stay ahead of CRA, IRS, and cross-border requirements rather than reacting to them.
- Work with tax advisors and third-party providers on filings and tax positions.
- Drive financial and tax strategy that supports sustainable growth.
- Review payroll and oversee administration of the Company's stock option plan and RRSP.
Partner with leadership and the business
- Provide the actuals, balance sheet analysis, and variance commentary that the Senior Director and CFO rely on for forecasts, board materials, and investor presentations.
- Support the annual budget and reforecast cycles with reliable actuals and clear commentary on what is driving results.
- Contribute to targets, budgets, and investor materials alongside the Senior Director and executives.
- Present financial results to leadership and explain what is driving variances and what to do about them.
- Act as Finance's lead with Operations on cost, inventory, and supply chain accounting.
Build for the next stage of growth
- Drive continuous process improvement and automation across the close and reporting cycle.
- Continuously enhance our financial systems and processes to keep up with growth.
- Take on new finance projects and technical areas as the business grows.
