This is an opportunity to join the division at the ground level and play an important role in shaping how it develops.
Position Overview
Legacy is seeking an experienced Senior Damage Prevention Technician to help establish and grow our new Locates & Damage Prevention division.
This is a senior, hands-on field position suited to an experienced utility locator who is interested in doing more than completing locate requests. The successful candidate will initially be responsible for performing utility locates while working closely with Legacy's leadership team to develop the processes, standards, documentation, equipment requirements, quality controls, and training practices that will form the foundation of the department.
As the division grows, this individual will also play a key role in training and mentoring future Damage Prevention Technicians and helping Legacy build a knowledgeable, safety-focused, high-performing locates team.
Because this is a new department, we are looking for someone who brings significant practical field experience, sound technical judgment, and the confidence to help establish best practices rather than simply step into an existing program.
Key Responsibilities
- Perform accurate and timely underground utility locates throughout Calgary and surrounding areas for both design and construction purposes.
- Help establish Legacy's new Locates & Damage Prevention program, including field procedures, workflows, documentation standards, quality controls, and best practices.
- Provide technical expertise and recommendations regarding locating equipment, field technology, reporting systems, and operational requirements.
- Complete locates involving multiple utility types, including power, telecommunications, gas, water, sewer, and other underground infrastructure.
- Interpret utility records, engineering drawings, mapping, as-builts, and other available information to support accurate field locating.
- Identify and troubleshoot complex or conflicting utility information and determine appropriate next steps.
- Maintain accurate field records, sketches, photographs, reports, and supporting documentation.
- Ensure work is completed in accordance with applicable legislation, industry standards, client requirements, and damage-prevention practices.
- Work closely with Legacy's engineering, design, field, and project management teams to support design locates and infrastructure projects.
- Support construction-related locate requests and communicate effectively with contractors, clients, utility owners, and other stakeholders.
- Assist in developing Legacy's internal training and onboarding program for future Damage Prevention Technicians.
- Train, mentor, and provide technical guidance to new locators as the department grows.
- Support field audits and quality reviews to ensure consistent locating and documentation standards.
- Help identify opportunities to improve safety, efficiency, technology, and service delivery within the department.
- Contribute to the long-term development and growth of Legacy's Locates & Damage Prevention services.
Required Qualifications
- Minimum 5 years of utility locating and/or damage prevention experience, with significant hands-on field experience.
- Completion of a recognized Utility Locator Training Program or equivalent industry training and experience.
- Strong working knowledge of underground utility infrastructure and damage-prevention practices.
- Experience locating multiple utility types, including power, telecommunications, gas, water, and sewer.
- Strong working knowledge of electromagnetic locating equipment and associated field techniques.
- Ability to interpret utility records, mapping, engineering drawings, and construction documentation.
- Familiarity with Alberta One-Call/Utility Safety Partners, ALP requirements, ground-disturbance practices, and locate ticket processes.
- Demonstrated ability to independently assess and troubleshoot complex locate situations.
- Experience mentoring, training, or providing technical guidance to other field personnel.
- Strong understanding of field safety requirements and documentation practices.
- Excellent communication, organization, judgment, and problem-solving skills.
- Comfortable working independently and taking ownership of developing processes within a new department.
- Valid Class 5 driver's licence and ability to travel throughout Calgary and surrounding areas, with occasional travel to other Legacy service areas as required.
- Must successfully complete a background check.
Preferred Assets
- Previous experience in a senior locator, lead hand, trainer, supervisor, or damage-prevention leadership role.
- Experience helping establish or improve a utility locating or damage-prevention program.
- Experience developing training materials, standard operating procedures, field standards, or quality-control processes.
- Experience completing engineering/design locates in addition to construction locates.
- Experience working directly with engineering and utility design teams.
- Knowledge of digital locate reporting, mapping, GIS, and mobile workforce management platforms.
- Experience conducting field audits or quality reviews.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office products.
