Transportation Supervisor
Position Summary
The Transportation Supervisor is a frontline operational leader responsible for the safe, compliant, and efficient execution of transportation, dock, and dispatch activities during assigned shifts. This role directly supervises drivers, owner-operators, dock staff, and dispatch team members and owns same-day execution, coordinating dispatch, managing driver activity, enforcing safety and compliance requirements, and resolving operational issues to ensure reliable service, safety, and data accuracy.
In smaller markets, this role also supports disciplined local growth execution by identifying customer opportunities, strengthening in-market relationships, and operating in alignment with the Local Sales Operating Model while maintaining operational excellence.
Key Responsibilities
Dispatch, Driver & Dock Execution
· Plan and execute daily dispatch and load assignments for company drivers, owner-operators, and carrier partners.
· Coordinate outbound and inbound dock activity and linehaul movements to meet service commitments.
· Manage dock operations during assigned shifts, ensuring proper load build, scanning accuracy, and departure discipline.
· Monitor yard, trailer, and shunter activity throughout the shift to maintain operational flow and minimize delays.
· Resolve same-day service disruptions, missed connections, and operational exceptions as they arise.
Driver, Owner Operator & Dock Leadership
· Hold drivers and owner-operators accountable to consistent work standards, safety expectations, and service discipline across all shifts.
· Provide direction and support to drivers, owner operators, dock staff and dispatch team members on shift.
· Conduct shift start-ups, safety talks, and operational briefings.
· Manage driver schedules, work assignments, and same-day changes.
· Support onboarding and training of new drivers and dock staff.
· Reinforce attendance standards, work rules, and performance expectations.
Safety, Compliance & Quality
· Enforce compliance with HOS, E-logs, safety procedures, food safety, and regulatory requirements.
· Support safety coaching efforts and ensure corrective actions are completed.
· Initiate and support incident, injury, near-miss, OS&D, and claims reporting.
· Ensure accuracy and completeness of trip documentation, scans, and load records.
Cost, Accuracy & Productivity Control
This area ensures operational accuracy supports cost control, billing integrity, and trust across the network.
· Monitor daily labor utilization, productivity, and overtime during assigned shifts.
· Validate driver and owner-operator payroll, trip records, and settlements for accuracy.
· Ensure compliance with dispatch, billing, and operational system requirements.
· Act as a site-level champion for transportation systems accuracy (e.g., Truckmate, Samsara).
Small Market Playbook Execution
The Transportation Supervisor supports disciplined local growth and customer ownership in alignment with the Local Sales Operating Model.
· Maintain regular, structured communication with key customers in-market to strengthen relationships and reinforce service reliability.
· Identify share-of-wallet, service expansion, win-back, and net new opportunity signals through operational interaction and customer dialogue.
· Log and track identified opportunities in Salesforce in accordance with established workflow and governance standards.
· Collaborate with Business Development and Customer Service to ensure unified messaging and coordinated customer engagement.
· Validate operational feasibility, capacity, and service capability prior to formal opportunity escalation.
· Monitor local volume trends, capacity utilization, and service performance to proactively identify growth and retention risks.
· Reinforce disciplined execution to protect customer confidence and support sustainable growth.
Qualifications
· 3–5 years of experience in transportation, logistics, or dock operations.
· Experience supervising drivers, owner-operators, dispatch, or dock teams.
Strong working knowledge of dispatch operations, linehaul coordination, and transportation compliance requirements.
· Comfortable working in unionized and/or non-unionized environments.
· Ability to work variable shifts, including nights, weekends, and holidays.
· Computer Skills - MS Office and Outlook, experience with TMS a plus
· Strong communication (French is an asset), organization, and problem-solving skills.
