SENIOR ACCOUNTANT
Cranbrook, British Columbia | Full-Time, Permanent | On-Site
If you have reached the point where you want more ownership than one account, one process, or one piece of someone else’s close, this role gives you room to own the accounting for several businesses from end to end.
As Senior Accountant with MacKay Contracting, you will take accounting ownership of several operating and holding entities while working closely with our Controller and CFO on the financial reporting of the broader group.
You will see the full accounting cycle, understand the businesses behind the numbers, and have a real voice in how our finance processes continue to improve.
The Work
MacKay operates across heavy civil construction, mining services, aggregates, equipment-intensive operations, and related businesses.
That creates accounting work with some substance behind it.
You will take primary accounting responsibility for several related entities within the MacKay group, spanning operating businesses, corporate entities, and cross-border activities.
At the same time, you will support the Controller through the monthly and annual reporting cycle for the MacKay group.
The objective is straightforward: accurate books, clean reconciliations, dependable reporting, and fewer surprises at month-end and year-end.
What You'll Get to Own
Run a clean month-end. Prepare journal entries, bank reconciliations, and intercompany reconciliations that are complete, supportable, and ready for Controller review.
Know where the inventory stands. Take ownership of the physical inventory process for our aggregates and contracting operations, including counts, valuation, reconciliation of production to the ledger, and understanding the reason behind adjustments rather than simply processing them.
Keep supplier accounting moving. Work alongside our AP Lead to review and post supplier invoices within the contracting entity and help ensure costs are recorded accurately and in the right place.
Build a year-end file our external accountants can work from. Prepare working papers, reconciliations, schedules, and supporting information, and respond directly to external accountant requests during the year-end process.
Keep the systems and data clean. Work primarily within our accounting and project systems while helping identify better ways to complete the work. If a process can be made clearer, faster, or more reliable, we want you thinking about it.
Create real depth within Finance. Provide coverage for the Controller during absences and have coverage for your responsibilities in return. One of the reasons this role exists is to build genuine backup into the finance team rather than having critical knowledge sitting with one person.
You'll Probably Fit Here If
You are the kind of accountant who notices when something does not make sense.
You do not solve an unexplained variance by forcing the reconciliation. You follow it until you understand what happened.
You are comfortable owning a close, working independently, and bringing an issue forward when something needs another set of eyes.
You also understand that in an operating business, the answer is not always sitting in the accounting system. Sometimes you need to talk to Operations, understand what happened in the field, and connect that back to the financial records.
Your Experience Will Likely Include
- Month-end and year-end close experience from start to finish in a multi-entity environment
- Working knowledge of ASPE and experience preparing a year-end file for external accountants
- Five or more years of progressive accounting experience, or a shorter track record that clearly demonstrates comparable ownership
- The ability to produce accurate work under a deadline without sacrificing judgement
Even Better If You Bring
- A CPA designation or active progress toward one
- Experience with ERP, construction accounting, or project management systems
- Construction, aggregates, equipment, inventory, or job-cost accounting experience
- Experience with a U.S. entity or cross-border reporting
These are advantages, not reasons for the right person to count themselves out.
What You Can Expect From MacKay
You will have direct access to the Controller and CFO and meaningful responsibility within a finance team where your work is visible.
You can also expect:
- $75,000 – $95,000 annual salary, based on experience
- A permanent, full-time position
- A full benefits package
- The opportunity to take genuine ownership rather than being limited to one piece of the accounting cycle
- Exposure to construction, mining, aggregates, equipment, corporate entities, and cross-border operations
- A voice in how accounting processes and systems continue to develop
- A Cranbrook-based position with a commute measured in minutes and skiing, fishing, biking, hiking, and the Rocky Mountains close to home
-
This is an on-site position in Cranbrook, BC. It is not a remote role.
