We are currently recruiting for an experienced Controls Engineer to support automation, robotics and production equipment within a high-volume automotive manufacturing client.
This is an excellent opportunity for an Electrical, Controls, Automation or Mechatronics Engineer/Technologist who enjoys troubleshooting production equipment, programming PLCs, working with robots and improving automated manufacturing systems.
You will play a key role in keeping automated production systems running efficiently while supporting new equipment installations, engineering changes and continuous improvement initiatives.
NOTE:
- 6-month contract with extension possible
- Ability to work all three shifts is required
- Ability work overtime including weekends and holidays when required
RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Troubleshoot and resolve PLC, robot, HMI, conveyor and automated equipment issues in a fast-paced production environment
- Program, modify and optimize PLC ladder logic to improve equipment performance, reliability and production flow
- Support the programming, commissioning and integration of new automation, machining, conveyor and gantry systems
- Work with robotics, sensors, vision systems, VFDs, encoders and other industrial automation components
- Diagnose industrial communication issues involving Ethernet/IP, Profinet, Profibus and other PLC/robot networks
- Modify automation programs to support engineering changes, process improvements and new product launches
- Use plant monitoring and manufacturing systems to analyze cycle time, downtime, equipment performance and production data
- Maintain current PLC and automation program backups and support equipment recovery/reliability initiatives
- Support automation installations and coordinate controls - related activities with engineering, maintenance, production and outside contractors
- Assist with automation campaigns, equipment upgrades and continuous improvement projects
- Analyze recurring equipment issues and implement permanent corrective actions rather than temporary fixes
- Read and interpret electrical schematics, control drawings, machine layouts and I/O documentation
- Support root-cause investigations and continuous improvement using tools such as 8D, FMEA, DMAIC, Poka-yoke and Kaizen
- Work closely with production and maintenance teams to minimize downtime and improve quality, throughput and equipment reliability
REQUIRED SKILLS & QUALIFICATIONS:
- Diploma/degree in Electrical Engineering, Controls Engineering, Automation, Mechatronics or a related discipline
- 1 - 3 years’ experience working with robotics (Fanuc) and automated production equipment (conveyor/gantry) in an automotive manufacturing environment. Equipment commissioning and new product launch experience considered an asset
- Hands-on experience with PLC programming (Allen- Bradley/Siemens) and troubleshooting
- Experience working with Cognex vision systems is considered an asset
- Ability to read and interpret electrical schematics and control drawings
- Experience with industrial communication networks such as Ethernet/IP, Profinet, Profibus or similar
- Lean Manufacturing and Six Sigma experience. Lean Tools; 5S, Kanban, Poka-yoke, and Value Stream Mapping
- Ability to troubleshoot electrical, controls and automation problems systematically
- Strong communication and problem-solving skills
COMPENSATION & BENEFITS:
- $35.00 - $40.00 / hour (depending on experience)
