With more than 20 years of experience in civil construction on Vancouver Island, Milestone Equipment Contracting Inc. has built a strong reputation for delivering quality projects through experienced people, strong relationships, and a commitment to doing things right.
Our people are our greatest asset, and we're committed to providing a safe, supportive workplace where employees are valued, encouraged to grow, and recognized for their contributions.
As we continue to grow, we're looking for a versatile and experienced Class 1 Driver / Heavy Equipment Operator to join our team.
About the Role
We're looking for someone who can do more than just drive a truck!
The ideal candidate is an experienced Class 1 Driver who is also comfortable operating heavy equipment and willing to lend a hand wherever needed to keep projects moving.
This is a hands-on, varied role suited to someone who enjoys working in civil construction, takes pride in their work, and understands that getting the job done often means being flexible and working together as a team.
Your primary responsibility will be operating tandem dump trucks and trucks with pony trailers to transport materials to and from construction sites. However, depending on project needs, you may also operate excavators, loaders, dozers, or other heavy equipment, and assist with general site activities.
We're looking for someone with a positive attitude, a strong work ethic, and a willingness to pitch in wherever needed.
Duties and Responsibilities
- Safely operate tandem dump trucks and trucks with pony trailers to transport gravel, soil, aggregates, and other construction materials.
- Operate heavy equipment, including excavators, loaders, dozers, and other machinery, as required based on experience and project needs.
- Assist with loading, unloading, moving, and placing materials on construction sites.
- Conduct daily pre-trip and post-trip inspections, routine equipment checks, and required safety documentation.
- Maintain equipment cleanliness and promptly report maintenance concerns, defects, or damage.
- Communicate effectively with dispatch, Site Supervisors, Superintendents, and other crew members to coordinate daily activities.
- Follow all safety procedures, traffic regulations, and company policies.
- Maintain accurate trucking slips, equipment records, and other required documentation.
- Support general construction activities and assist crew members when trucking or equipment operation is not required.
- Take initiative, adapt to changing priorities, and contribute to keeping projects safe, productive, and on schedule.
Qualifications & Skills
Required:
- Valid Class 1 driver's licence with a clean driving abstract.
- Experience operating tandem dump trucks and pony trailers in a construction environment.
- Previous experience operating heavy equipment in civil construction.
- Strong understanding of safe driving practices, equipment operation, and construction site safety.
- Ability to work independently, follow direction, and collaborate effectively with a team.
- Dependable, punctual, and comfortable working outdoors in varying weather conditions.
- A positive, professional attitude and willingness to take on different tasks as needed.
Considered an Asset:
- Five or more years of experience in civil construction trucking and/or equipment operation.
- Experience operating multiple types of heavy equipment, particularly excavators, loaders, and dozers.
- Experience with equipment hauling and machine transport.
- Mechanical aptitude and basic equipment troubleshooting skills.
- Experience working on roadbuilding, underground utility, or other civil construction projects.
What We're Really Looking For
Beyond the licences and experience, we're looking for a team player who understands the importance of flexibility on a busy construction site.
Some days you'll be behind the wheel of a gravel truck. Other days you might be operating a loader, moving equipment, or helping the crew with whatever needs to get done.
We value people who take initiative, communicate well, look out for their coworkers, and aren't afraid to roll up their sleeves.
If you're someone who enjoys variety, takes pride in doing a good job, and believes that no task is beneath you when it comes to supporting your team, we'd love to hear from you.
