Role Description We are seeking an experienced and hands-on Accounting Manager to oversee the day-to-day accounting and financial reporting activities of a growing retail company with multiple store locations.
The ideal candidate has strong accounting fundamentals, excellent Excel skills, experience with retail operations, payroll and government remittances, and the ability to produce accurate and timely financial reporting. Experience with Shopify and retail/POS environments is considered an asset.
Key Responsibilities
- Manage the day-to-day accounting functions for multiple retail store locations.
- Prepare monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements and management reports.
- Manage the month-end and year-end closing processes, including journal entries, accruals, reconciliations, and supporting schedules.
- Prepare and analyze Income Statements, Balance Sheets, and Cash Flow Statements.
- Perform account reconciliations and investigate variances or discrepancies.
- Prepare budgets, forecasts, and variance analysis to support management decision-making.
- Manage accounts payable and accounts receivable processes.
- Oversee bank and credit card reconciliations, including reconciliation of retail store deposits and payment processors.
- Reconcile sales from retail stores, POS systems, e-commerce platforms, and other sales channels to accounting records and bank deposits.
- Prepare and file sales tax returns (HST/GST/PST, as applicable) and ensure remittances are completed accurately and on time.
- Prepare and manage Employer Health Tax (EHT) filings and remittances.
- Manage or oversee payroll processing, payroll reconciliations, source deductions, T4s, Records of Employment, and related payroll reporting.
- Maintain the general ledger and ensure transactions are properly classified and recorded.
- Support inventory accounting, including inventory reconciliations, cost of goods sold, and inventory adjustments.
- Develop and maintain financial controls and accounting procedures across store locations.
- Work with external accountants and auditors and prepare supporting schedules for year-end.
- Assist management with financial analysis, profitability reporting, and other ad hoc reporting.
- Identify opportunities to automate and improve accounting and reporting processes.
Qualifications & Experience
- Diploma or degree in Accounting, Finance, Business Administration, or a related field.
- Minimum 5 years of progressive accounting experience, preferably within a retail or multi-location environment.
- Strong understanding of financial accounting and month-end reporting.
- Hands-on payroll experience.
- Experience preparing sales tax and EHT filings.
- Strong knowledge of accounts payable, accounts receivable, bank reconciliations, and general ledger accounting.
- Experience with inventory accounting in a retail environment is preferred.
- Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Excel, including PivotTables, XLOOKUP/VLOOKUP, SUMIFS, formulas, data analysis, and large data sets.
- Experience with QuickBooks or similar accounting software.
- Experience with Shopify and Shopify reporting/reconciliation is an asset.
- Experience working with POS systems and payment processors is an asset.
- CPA designation or progress toward a CPA designation is an asset but not required.
