About the role
Join UBC Student Housing and Community Services as a Refrigeration Mechanic, maintaining and troubleshooting HVAC, refrigeration, cooling, and environmental control systems across SHCS facilities. Reporting to the Trades Manager, you will keep critical systems - from data centre cooling to lab environmental chambers - running safely, efficiently, and reliably.
Responsibilities
- Diagnose electrical and mechanical failures on refrigeration and air conditioning equipment
- Test and optimize equipment performance after repairs
- Install and commission new HVAC machinery and equipment, such as heat pumps and air conditioners
- Perform scheduled preventive maintenance and inspections
- Maintain, calibrate, and repair data centre cooling and environmental control systems, environmental chambers, lab coolers and freezers, chillers, cooling towers, condensers, and heat recovery equipment
- Read and interpret schematics, blueprints, and operating manuals; create written reports
- Follow all maintenance procedures, regulatory codes, and WorkSafe practices to keep a safe workplace
- Act as a trainer and mentor for apprentices
Qualifications
- Red Seal or BCTQ Refrigeration and Air Conditioning Mechanic certification
- 3–5 years of related experience in an industrial setting
- Valid BC Class 5 driver's licence
- Thorough knowledge of mechanical trades practices and procedures; demonstrated troubleshooting ability
- Able to work in a team, prioritize workload, and meet deadlines
- Desirable: 4th Class Power Engineer certificate
