ROLE SUMMARY
This is a hands-on, field-based role. Most of the week is spent on the road at our facilities.
The Director of Facility Operations makes sure every Momentum facility (turf fields, running tracks and seasonal domes) is safe, clean, properly staffed and booked to capacity. Facility Managers run their sites with autonomy; this role sets one standard across the portfolio, checks it in person and steps in when something falls short.
Top priorities:
· Dome technical expertise. Bring, or quickly build, dome technical knowledge, and own every technical problem through to resolution.
· Dome up / dome down. Lead the annual cycle across all dome sites with the Dome Up/Dome Down Coordinator.
· Daily point of contact and point of escalation. Direct management of Facility Managers. Primary point of contact when something goes wrong at a facility, including after hours.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
Dome operations and technical support
· Act as the in-house lead on dome systems: pressure, blowers, heating, power, backup generators and snow load.
· Own dome technical problems until resolved, whether by fixing them directly, directing site staff or bringing in a specialist.
· Manage the dome manufacturer and HVAC provider relationships, including service visits and technical support.
· Complete the company dome training program (delivered by HR, the dome manufacturer and the HVAC provider) and ensure all required site staff complete and apply it.
· Maintain dome operating procedures, emergency plans, preventive maintenance and inspection records.
Dome up / dome down - execution
· Lead the execution of dome-up and dome-down cycle at every site in coordination with the Dome Up/Dome Down Coordinator who manages the back end.
· Be on site for installs and takedowns, sign off safety checks, and review each cycle to improve the next.
Escalation and issue resolution
· Serve as the first escalation point for Facility Managers on urgent mechanical, safety and staffing issues, including after hours.
· Make clear calls under pressure, such as closing a field or dome, and communicate them quickly.
· Manage incident reporting and investigation, and fix the root cause of repeat issues w facility mgr.
Facility standards
· Set/enforce one written standard for cleanliness, presentation, staffing and operations at every site.
· Visit facilities on a regular rotation, seeing each site at least biweekly, and audit against the standard with each Facility Manager.
· Give Facility Managers autonomy and hold them accountable for results.
Utilization
· Work with the Director of Facility Sales and Facility Managers to fill unused hours and remove operational barriers to bookings.
New facility build-outs
· Partner with the Construction Project Manager, who leads construction, while this role leads operational readiness.
· Give operational input during design, and take part in commissioning and punch-list walk-throughs.
· Lead hiring and training for new sites with HR and the CAO, and own pre-opening timelines, checklists and the opening playbook.
Maintenance, team and partners
· Own preventive maintenance for turf and tracks in coordination with the Regional Maintenance Manager, and manage maintenance vendors.
· Plan capital replacement, such as turf life-cycle and dome structures, with the COO and CEO.
· Lead and coach the Facility Managers, set facility hiring standards and run performance reviews.
· Meet school and municipal partners with respective Facility Managers on site regularly, and monitor lease and partnership compliance, escalating to the COO and CAO.
Budgets and reporting
· Oversee the sum of all facility costs and be accountable for the portfolio total, including dome operations and incremental costs allocated across the dome portfolio.
· Manage within the repair and improvement budget set by the COO and CEO, and each facility’s maintenance budget, working with Facility Managers to keep every site on track.
· Find and deliver cost efficiencies across the portfolio, such as consolidating vendors and improving scheduling.
· Report KPIs on standards, utilization, training, incidents and cost with the COO and Director of Finance.
QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE
· Dome experience: hands-on experience operating air-supported domes and leading dome up / dome down is preferred. A strong mechanical or building-systems background, with the ability to learn fast and complete our dome training before the first dome season, will also be considered.
· 7+ years in field-based facility or operations management, including 3+ years leading multi-site teams through managers.
· Experience acting as the escalation point for operational emergencies.
· Experience managing budgets, controlling labour and vendor costs, and planning capital replacement.
· Experience working with public-sector partners such as school boards or municipalities.
· New facility opening experience is a strong asset.
· Working knowledge of Ontario health and safety requirements.
· Valid Ontario driver's licence and reliable vehicle; able to work outdoors in all weather.
