The Municipal Insurance Association of British Columbia (MIABC) is a member-owned and member-operated reciprocal risk pool serving local governments across the province. Founded in 1987, when 144 B.C. local governments came together after struggling to find affordable, reliable coverage in the commercial insurance market, the MIABC was built on a simple idea: communities are stronger when they share knowledge, resources and risk.

Today, over 90% of B.C.'s local governments rely on the MIABC for stable liability and property insurance, protecting more than $15 billion in community assets, backed by an in-house team with deep local government expertise.

Beyond core coverage, our brokerage arm, Civic Risk Insurance Solutions (CRIS), helps members secure specialty insurance the MIABC doesn't underwrite directly, sourcing more than 20 types of coverage, including cyber, equipment breakdown and course of construction insurance, tailored to the unique risks local governments face.

The MIABC's mission isn't to turn a profit. It's to support members in providing the services their communities depend on. Surplus funds go back into keeping rates stable and funding a growing range of member education and resources, including Policy Development Toolkits, cybersecurity training, risk management scholarships, an annual Risk Management Conference, a Casual Legal Advice Program and more.

Every policy written, every claim resolved and every piece of advice shared reflects the belief the MIABC was founded on: that B.C.'s local governments, and the communities they serve, are worth investing in.
