Museums Aotearoa

Museums Aotearoa is a member association representing museums, galleries, art centres and other art and cultural places across the motu.

We believe in the social good of galleries, libraries, archives and museums. Museums and galleries are filled with wonders and they fill our wonder. We want to entice people with this dual benefit of seeing and learning new things, as much as gaining new experiences for themselves.

More than art, it’s art that provokes questions. More than taonga, these treasures enrich us. More than sculptures, these are objects that mould us. Museums and galleries offer curious minds to discover something new… about themselves.

They are also places people come to socialise and connect with friends and families, in a space where they can connect with themselves.

We define ‘museum’ as an organisation primarily engaged in collecting, caring for, developing, exhibiting or interpreting the natural and cultural heritage of Aotearoa New Zealand. The term includes marae and exhibition galleries, or centres maintained on an on-going basis by other organisations.
