Human Resources Business Partner (Hybrid)
About NextPlay HR
NextPlay HR is a fractional Human Resources partner to founder-led and small-medium sized companies across Canada and the United States. We've been in business for two and a half years, and we're a team of four. We're industry agnostic, so we work with companies across every sector, from early-stage startups to organizations with 100+ employees.
How We Work
We believe people are a company's greatest competitive advantage, and that strong performance comes from a high-functioning team, well led and well supported. That belief shapes everything we do. We partner closely with founders and leaders to build the people practices that help their teams, and their businesses, perform at their best.
Why This Role Exists
We're growing, and we're adding a Human Resources Business Partner to support our clients and help shape how we deliver as a firm. You'll manage your own client accounts, partner with founders and leaders at every level, and help build the systems and processes behind our work.
What You'll Do
- Partner with clients: advise founders, leadership teams, and managers on employee relations, performance, compensation, policy, and workforce planning
- Run the essentials: support payroll, benefits, onboarding, and the everyday questions that keep a business running smoothly
- Bring judgment: understand the business behind the question, and recommend what fits
- Help build NextPlay: set up and manage our work management and time tracking platforms, and contribute to the processes our team uses
- Pitch in: we're a small team, and everyone helps where it's needed
What You'll Bring
- 6+ years of Human Resources experience, including at least 2 years in a client-facing or business partner role
- Payroll experience
- Working knowledge of employment standards across multiple jurisdictions
- Strong time management, with the ability to balance several clients and priorities at once
- Attention to detail, from payroll to policy
- Clear, confident communication with people at every level of an organization
- An interest in how people decisions affect business results
Nice to have:
- Cross-border experience, Canada and the United States
- Experience in unionized environments, including working with collective agreements
- French, spoken and written
- A Certified Human Resources Professional designation, or progress toward one
If you don't meet every point on this list but the role feels right, we'd still like to hear from you.
What Working Here Looks Like
- Direct access: you'll work closely with Chantelle Perry, Founder and Chief Executive Officer, who brings 20 years of Human Resources leadership, a Master of Business Administration, the Certified Human Resources Leader designation, and Wharton's Chief Human Resources Officer program.
- Breadth of experience: you'll work across industries, company sizes, and both sides of the border.
- A voice in how we grow: with a team our size, your ideas shape how we work. Decisions are made quickly and close to the work.
- Room to develop: as NextPlay grows, there will be opportunities to take on more. We'll talk regularly about where you want to go.
This May Not Be the Right Fit If
- You prefer a clearly defined scope that rarely changes
- You're looking for the structure and resources of a large organization
- You'd rather focus on a single company than work across several
The Details
- Salary: $75,000 to $100,000 base, depending on experience, plus a performance bonus
- Time off: 4 weeks' vacation, personal days, and paid statutory holidays
- Benefits: meaningful benefits that support your health and wellbeing
- Work model: mostly remote, with onsite client work in the Greater Toronto Area about 10% to 15% of the time
